Axis constraints bug

I've never been a big fan of the axis constraints in that I don't want the last axis I clicked on to be locked. Meaning that I don't like when I click on the x arrow of an object then try to move the object from an area away from the axis, it's still locked to x. I'm pretty sure it didn't work this way many years ago. It would be great to have 3ds just allow you to freely move an object on two axis when you select any part of the object and not just locked to the axis you last used?!

Thing is, in max 2022, even this seems to be broken. It seems to be locked to one constraint sometimes and then two other times, even though the different axis constraints don't change in the tool bar. Does anyone else have this problem. Here is a video to show you what I mean:

(FYI, I'm not using any shortcut keys in this video, just left clicking and dragging)

Hmmmm...not getting that behaviour on my end. A few questions:

  • Is the object in your video one object or is it a group/parent/child?
  • What is your reference coordinate system set to? (View, World, etc.)
  • If you change the viewport from wireframe to Shaded does it make any difference?

It's a group, I think it is only doing this behaviour with groups (good point)

View, I've tried world and it seems to work ok under that system

Shaded makes no difference

Many thanks
