Assigning a bitmap texture to several objects

Hi

I am trying to assign a bitmap texture of a custom made galvanized metal material to several objects with various orientations, sizes, shapes. However, when I assign the texture to all objects in one go, they just appear plain grey.

If you take a look at the screenshot, the same material needs to be applied to all objects in the view.

You'll need to make sure that each of your objects has the correct UVW Mapping applied.  This tells 3ds Max how to drape the bitmap over the object.

3dsmax has a control set by default called "use real world scale".  The impact of this setting can result in this outcome.  If so, you might zoom WAY in, and find the expected appearance showing teeny tiny and tiled a million times.  When zoomed back out, the tiles all blend together and you see basic colors.

If you uncheck "use real world scale", you'll probably see what you expected.

@bob.bernstein 3ds Max will default to Real World Mapping only if you choose the Design option at first run, rather than Classic.

If the texture is appearing very tiny in the viewport, then the map may still be at a default size of 1 unit, or not set to use Real World Map Size.  In the material editor, you can easily adjust the scale that the bitmap appears by adjusting the values of its size.

If you use a modifier that creates UVW Mapping (Extrude, UVW Map, Lathe, etc.) you can check to see if it has enabled the checkbox for Use Real World Map Size.  If you plan to use Real World Mapping, I highly encourage you to use it in both modifier and Bitmap.
