Asset manager : how to find bitmap's location ?

Hi all,

In the asset manager a bitmap status says "File missing".

I obviously move it since the last time I opened this scene (Max 2025).

So I need to know how this bitmap was used in the scene in order to find it back in one of my numerous folders full of bitmaps...

What is the way to find what object uses this bitmap in my scene?

How to find what material this bitmap is used in?

Maybe I'm missing something but the asset manager seems to lack a lot of crucial informations...

I think you might be asking about the 'Asset Tracking Toggle.' I don't know of another "Asset Manager" in Max. But if Asset Tracking shows a "file missing," just go to Slate Material Editor, open the 'Scene Materials', right click on the header name and choose 'Show Subtree' and you'll see the material with the bitmap nested below it. That's the material it's connected to.

I don't know that Asset Tracker has ever had the ability to show you what material it's 'missing' from. It would be a nice feature. Maybe head over to the "Ideas" forum and post that there. If it gets votes, it might get implemented.

FYI, if you frequently have missing bitmaps and it's difficult and frustrating to reconnect them all, I'd suggest you look at a plugin called 'Relink Bitmaps.' Colin Senner makes it and is a nice guy. It will save your life, is not very expensive and has been around a long time. It's coding is solid and reliable and it's one of the 3rd party Max plugins I could not live without. I tell him every year when Max is released, "please, please don't stop making this..."...lol...  🙂

I didnt know about the 'Show Subtree' option...very usefull, thanks!

Another question:

Once the material is found in the slate editor is there a way to know what objects it's assigned to in the scene?

(a command that would be named 'select assigned objects' or 'show assigned objects list'...)

PS : you're right, I was talking about the asset tracking, my mistake, there's no asset manager

Some reading of the official documentation might help you. You are asking questions about normal Max usage that is easy to figure out if you get in the habit of using the documentation. The forum is here to help of course, but mostly for problems or things not working properly.

However, yes, you can do what you ask. Just 'right-click' on a material and choose 'Select' and it will flyout and choose 'Select by Material' and a list will pop up with the items selected already.

You're right, it's here in the slate editor, in fact (I wasnt clear) I was looking for it directly in the "asset tracker", right-clicking on the "missing bitmap" to select all the objects affected in the scene.
But using the slate editor is definitely a workaround.
