All assets missing after saving a new version

I have been working on several models all hosted on our network. We have assets referenced in several locations. Unfortunately, because we're using Parallels, our server prefix often changes. This isn't a problem when I open the original file, but anytime I save or archive a new version, it disconnects all links, despite the originals still being in the exact same location. There are also several instances of assets showing a UNC path, despite existing in a specific location on the server and UNC being unchecked in settings.

Any help would be appreciated as this is tedious and unnerving.

Hello @Anonymous,

I'd like to help you here with your problem regarding missing assets.  Can you help me understand the screenshot that you've attached?  Is the problem what is happening with say the file name 5015_1_240.jpg?  Or is it where the files have the prefix \\psf\.  (Or both?)

1) When you say your server prefix changes, do you mean the drive letter or actual server name?  (I'm assuming drive letter.)  If you refresh in the asset tracker, do the names resolve?

2) If the answer to 1 is drive letter, wouldn't that help get around changing drive letters?  The UNC is really just referencing the files based on computer name/share folder instead of drive letter, which seems perfect for a situation like yours.   If you convert the T: links to UNC (right click, "Resolve Path to UNC location") does the problem still happen?  Does it get worse?

3) If the answer to 1 is the actual server name... can parallels be configured to always have the same drive letter?  Seems like that would also fix the problem.

Thank you for answering those questions for me.  There is no reason why Max should remove your links after you save or something of that nature.  I've worked in a number of production environments where the server went down but it didn't delete all my links to files, so I wonder if this is actually a problem with how Parallels works under the hood.  I can't really understand why it's resetting or dropping your connection after a save, but even a dropped connection shouldn't remove your links, they should just be 'missing' texures in the asset tracker.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, I appreciate it.

Best Regards
