Hello,

I just received the link to download the 2020 version but strangely I do not see any information on the subject. Autodesk did not communicate on the release of this version?
There is the help page but it is not very rich in information:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2020/ENU/?guid=GUID-2958CAB3-3C80-40AF-969E-BF23AB4296A5
Do you have more info on what's new?

@Anonymous. I am sorry you feel this way about the release and if I may, I would like to highlight one thing that hopefully can shed some light on how we push capability in 3ds Max embracing our new continuous delivery model. Since 3ds Max 2019, this 2020 release is the fourth release that we’ve done. Each of these releases (major or updates) included new capabilities. On average, in each of those releases, you will see about 3 months’ worth of development effort. So, one should really look at the cumulative list of capabilities we added since 2019 to evaluate one year of product evolution. I hope this helps. As noted above in the blog post, here is the link to see the overall value added to 3ds Max over time: https://area.autodesk.com/3dsmax-timeline/.

That line might sell to the newcomers, but those of us who were around before the bean counters took over (my guess what went wrong) know that it does not add up to the way it was when 3ds Max was obviously in the hands of dedicated, passionate developers.  A constant trickle is still a trickle.  You can say we're wrong all you want, but we KNOW what the experience is like TO US.

I don't think I'm being naive here... Didn't we see interesting new stuff appear during the year the in the updates? If this is their new way of keeping the product up to date. So be it, as long as I get bang for my buck.

Personaly I'm not against this way of updating (Kind of what Adobe is doing).

Poor communication though.

The method is fine.  It's just that continued development is not anywhere near the level it was before subscriptions.  Back then they had motivation to come up with enough new features and improvements to make us WANT to buy each new version.  I, for one, was HAPPY to do so and looked forward to it.   Now it's just "Give us the money or the software dies!"

The good old days before subscriptions and before maintenance. When you could decide whether to update or not depending on the merits of what was being offered. When you could skip an update if it didn't take your fancy and still be eligible for the next one. When the customer was in charge. We're more like indentured servants now.

Exactly.    Unfortunately, extortion is way easier than innovation. It's also great for the stockholders in the short term, but karma is a real thing...

I'm evaluating a 3rd alternative to 3ds Max now (in my free time while waiting for Max to start up. <g>)

BTW, someone mentioned Adobe... haha...  yeah, Autodesk wants to be like them.  When they started the subscription thing I immediately found alternatives to their products that I like BETTER.  One is free (or $300 for the "Studio" version) and the other is under $50; ONCE!

As for those alternatives... It looks like I just might be GLAD this happened in the not too distant future.

This horse is dead.  We're not going to beat it back to life.  Time for a new horse.

I think I'll name him "Frodo."  (I'm a big LOTR fan...)

I think Auotdesk wrong the method for communicating the news.
Once all subscription updates were also considered new for the next version. Update for 3ds max 2016 is as new for 2017.
Now you have worked all year to make new updates and not announce them as new features in the new 2020 release.
it's obvious that users are disappointed, they only see, 2 new features and not all the others.
2019.1 - 2019.2 - 2019.3 are not for everyone, but only for pay a maintenance contract.

Now all this Update is permanet in 2020.

2020 is a solid release.
I know, I've been using the app for the last year, watching the progress since 2019, daily.

Huge improvements in shading, new shader via OSL, much better HLSL hook to viewport, the interactivity with procedural noises is superior.

I wrote ocean and volumetric and very heavy noise shaders during the last year working in 2020, and I am very impressed with performance in the viewport, they run realtime, also 2020 performance in general has gotten a significant boost.

Also big shout out to the Arnold team who is absolutly killing it with awesome updates in constant flows, last couple additions of Arnold GPU and SSS v2 are awesome and this is just the beginning.

Isn`t this more of a result of the Scrum/Agile development pattern where you are constantly iterating on features/projects and release them when ready? So 2020 is just another iteration, doesn`t mean nothing is in development right now.

I have read several times through the Roadmap now and the thing that got me interested the most, was the mentioning of Bifrost as a general procedural tool and effects system.

I was dreaming of something like that a while ago: Bifrost as a true multi-physic effects system for both Maya and 3dsmax that also can share setups and effects between those two applications.

I`m testing Arnold GPU at the moment and i really like it`s performance. Still has some way to go.

I guess it`s not planned to support 3dsmax legacy maps? Doesn`t matter, have to switch to Arnold/OSL shaders anyway.

Good luck development team!

Yes, the 2020 number means nothing, nothing has changed in workflows on beta, there is no page flipped in the book, no ticks made. Its just normal as usual, a point release with whatever they managed to scoop into the build before the compile window closed, and this will continue to progress like that, just like it has been for some time already.

Right there is no plans to support any further legacy maps, the reason is logic of course.

OSL + Arnold shaders are superior in both flexibility and what you can actually do,  and both shader standards will be supported on the GPU which is a significant deal.

The old legacy c++ shaders needs a lot of work and there are many, we already have superior noises via OSL than the noise maps that comes with max can ever hope to deliver as well.
Bercon noise needs recompiles and is also a legacy construct, we can build noises impossible to build with bercon maps, in OSL and we dont need to worry about having the latest Bercon.dll for the most recent max version.

With 2020 you also got simple tiles. OSL which effectivly takes the coomercial floor generator out of the image in a snap.

This is also why I developed a workflow around an OSL shader I wrote that is called Procedural Color which more or less takes Forest Color from Itoo out of the equation for vegetation, and I dont have to speculate over old shading standard shader hooks any more.

OSL can be ported via materialX to maya, houdini, c4d, katana, the old legacy maps are stone cold on that account.

@electrotoast_old,

That wasn't the point I was making - but hey ho !

If there was a way AD could just introduce these changes as an update, that'd go a LONG way to making me happier. I don't need my software to say 2019, 2020, 2021 etc. Just add these 'updates' as an 'update' 🙂

It'd save a big bunch of time reinstalling everything each year.

They need to break the SDK periodically to open the doors for new stuff.
Because of that the plugin defs need to recompile and likely change stuff in their plugins to make them run again.
That's what they're doing in the annual releases. Imagine they'd do that in every sp. Plugins like Forest pack and vray wouldn't make much progress since they'd have to put all their resources in updating for the new sp. Or just support one sp in a year.

@Anonymous I've tested on my end and yes, I also see a slowdown when comparing Quicksilver renders between 2019.3 and 2020.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I am going to try and find out when it happened and hopefully we'll get a fix in soon.

Best Regards,

Carlos

Thanks for getting right on it!

It's actualy the same in 2019.

I guess creating another UI  for screen-previews, is more important to Adesk then to actualy FIX THE FRAME RATE OUTPUT BUG?

Apparently a codec problem. Here is 3dsmax2020 with Lagarith Codec:

About a week ago, I got a chance to try out 3ds Max 2020 student version. I'm very impressed with the increased overall performance. Viewport performance is faster than '17, '18, or '19. I tried the same projects and while those older versions failed to play it at the 24fps the animation was set to, 2020 held a solid 24 in every project. Awesome! I did notice that some character skins broke, but I looked into this and I found out that the skin modifier was changed. This was expected, and no worries, I can easily fix the skins no problems. As soon as I install Vray, 3ds Max 2020 is "good to go" in my book! :) Thanks for the stability development team! 😄
