Hello,

I just received the link to download the 2020 version but strangely I do not see any information on the subject. Autodesk did not communicate on the release of this version?
There is the help page but it is not very rich in information:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2020/ENU/?guid=GUID-2958CAB3-3C80-40AF-969E-BF23AB4296A5
Do you have more info on what's new?

So how is Arnold updated - is the core updated with each new release and then subsequently through the MaxtoA versions? Never really understood how that works. I believe a new Arnold just dropped - is that part of 2020?

Thanks!

Daf

If you install the latest MAXtoA, you get the latest Arnold.

The plugins, like MAXtoA, include Arnold. And for every Arnold update, we update the plugins like MAXtoA

Quick question. What happens to Arnold when one cancels maintenance? Does MAXtoA continue to work? Can one still upgrade MAXtoA when new versions of Arnold come out?

It gets confusing because some advertised features of max like Shared Views don't even work unless one has an active subscription.

Doesn't matter.  It's not worth downloading. Development ground to a halt when Autodesk switched from innovation to extortion. This 23 year long ride has come to an end.  So sad...

You forgot to mention the improved frame rate counter!  WOW!!!!!!

EXACTLY.

I used it from 3D Studio R2 until... today.

I'm curious.
I read that for years now. And I think I also read the same names sometimes, saying "now I'm gonna switch" "I'm going to cancel my subscription right now."
If I'd want to do that I'd need at least two years in order to learn the new package and to be sure my previous projects are old enough so that's very unlikely I gotta have to touch them again. And if I'm thinking about the effort I'd have to put into this and calculate how much it would cost by using my hourly rate. It seems to be very obvious to stay.
Not to mention all the 3d stocks which are mostly for max and which I couldn't use anymore afterwards.
So, are you hobbyists? Or did you already put the effort in learning another dcc? Or are you just trying to scare AD?

Well I'm definitely going to start looking into Blender, that's an open source, free software that is suited for Arch Viz as well. They have a good build-in renderer and their last version, had a major successful overhaul in the UI, making it a lot more accessible for new users.

So there... that's my 5 cents... This is the first time adesk tried to push a new version down our throats where I feel financially abused.

I pay 1600€ subscription / year. It's like someone just told me:

"1000€ for the chamfer adjusting" their nr°1 highlight

and "600€ for the better FPS counter"

When Corona releases their updated installer, I'm going to use max 2020, and if it's truly this pathetic, blender is getting a new user before the end of this year.

If Blender can do what max can it is vary hard to argue free.

I just looked it up because I don't understand free lol

it says, Their mission is to build and provide a free and completely open source application for artists and teams working on all forms of 3D work. Blender uses the GNU General Public License, which allows anyone to use it for free, even for commercial purposes.

Unreal is free until you reach 3k in sales then you pay 5% i think

Unity is free now as well! And many others.

Maybe Autodesk should consider this way of thinking. It seems to be more popular these days.

btw I just downloaded Blender just for fun. took me about 20 min to download, install, and insert a fbx exported from max.

My gut wants to tell me theirs now way it can do what Max can which would give me more justification for the charge. But we all know that it is getting pretty competitive out there and their are a lot of cool programs! Its pretty exciting to be in the era we are in i think!

I'm very happy to see 3ds Max 2020 released so early. I'm coming "out of a ditch", so to say, with the lackluster performance of 3ds Max 2019. I cannot wait to open the same projects in 2020 and experience a more appropriate level of performance than what 2018, then 2019, were able to deliver.

I haven't had time to read the entire change log, but from what I have read so far, I am quite happy with. I also think that the roadmap is very ambitious. I cannot wait to see it carry out like that. 🙂

I plan on trying out 3ds Max 2020 as soon as the student version is ready. 😄

Everyone taking a nap or what? lol That sounds positive @Isaac_Zuniga !

Ya I was getting all depressed earlier however as I was working along in 2019 today I was thinking a lot about everything I have learned over the last 8 years!  I looked to see what version I started with and it was 2011!

I have come to love Max and is user interface over the years. At first it was super complicated and overwhelming to be honest. And you know what? it is still overwhelming! lol  Its going to suck when I have to end my contract because of affordability that's all i have to say.

Can someone check and verify if they can select and choose an avi codec when making a preview animation - in an older 3ds max version ?  I always had that option, even many years ago.

Why are they presenting this as something new ?

Am I missing something ?

I've used max since R2. I still have my perpetual license but I think this is the year I give it up. I've been trying out Unreal for a year, but still haven't got the modelling side covered. Even if I cancel max though, I can continue to use this final 2020 version, so that will keep me afloat until I find something new.

The subscription system has zero benefit for us. Autodesk basically owns our data. They can charge what they want. They have no incentive to develop. The result - customers pay through the nose for air-updates like the current one. It's a hideous corporate construct that treats customers like livestock.

Actually, there is one single benefit. If you do need to resurrect a project, you can rent the product for a short time. Ironically, that should help people quit and move on to something else, rather than present a reason to stay.

Sorry people but that looks like a joke. £1700 for a chamfer modifier ? I can write 2 serious plugins for that money. It is insane.  We already have, substance , vray, zbrush ,sketchup, houdini. vectorworks ..  It doesn't take much to take Autodesk out of the equation. Why are you doing this ?

Once AD did mention they were going to go all subscription, I think 3, maybe 4 years ago, I knew it was just going to be a question of time before I stopped paying and 2020 was my predicted end.   If I stop paying my perpetual maintenance fee from now, I'd like to think I'll get at least 4 years out of my 2020 software.  That'd be around £5000 of savings (if AD's price hikes are anything to go by) and is a hefty sum of money for me.  Put it this way, I don't pay any other software company anything anywhere near like I pay AD, each and every year.  Also, 4 years is a long time for me to learn Blender 🙂

Just tested 2020 fps on a scene.....

In 2019 reading was 135fps.

In 2020 fps is now being reported as 35 !

Hey, that's progress 🙂  Thanks AD, here take my money !

@JezEmin That's exactly it. We didn't say or promise it's faster, but more accurate. Previously what 2019 and earlier were DISPLAYING was wrong. It was always playing at lower rate from an actual scene evaluation point, but again was displaying the number incorrectly. In the realm of quality that is significant. Now it could've been even less, but with the updated validity intervals you do get an actual boost on top of it for that don't change over time.

There should be a maxscript command that can give you the previous 'incorrect' value if you want.

I want to add something here that's important I reckon, espeacialy for people like me, who went a little bananas when seeing the new list of features for 2020:

Nicolas Fonta:

@Anonymous. I am sorry you feel this way about the release and if I may, I would like to highlight one thing that hopefully can shed some light on how we push capability in 3ds Max embracing our new continuous delivery model. Since 3ds Max 2019, this 2020 release is the fourth release that we’ve done. Each of these releases (major or updates) included new capabilities. On average, in each of those releases, you will see about 3 months’ worth of development effort. So, one should really look at the cumulative list of capabilities we added since 2019 to evaluate one year of product evolution. I hope this helps. As noted above in the blog post, here is the link to see the overall value added to 3ds Max over time: https://area.autodesk.com/3dsmax-timeline/.
