3ds max file size unreasonably large - slow open and save...

Hello,

I had the same problem with 3ds max 2012 and now with 2013. I tried on several computers in my company.

For example, I have an empty scene. I merge an object from another (big) 3ds max scene - 100 polygons (chamefered box). Now my new scene with one objects in 120 megabytes big. I delete the object and save, and an empty scene is 119.8 megabytes big...

What seems to be problem here. In time, after lot of combinations, merging, modeling and adding, many my scenes are "infected" with large file size, and I dont know what to do about it. We almost missed some deadlines for very important clients due to this.

Please help. I am not the only one with this problem.

I will "clean" hundreds of my scenes now...

Oh, we posted at the same time.

Thanks 🙂 This made my whole year 🙂

For people not constantly checking scriptspot:
A nice script has been released recently called "Cleaner".It should help you to automatically clean some of the bogus file-bloating issues from your scenes via button click...

Cleaner didnt help me (one version didn work, and the other was too slow), but this did, with at least 30 HUGE scenes since i started cleaning them yesterday:

i pasted and run this into maxscript listener (from this thread http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/maxstation/n49_overly_large_max_files_or_scenes_that_take_up_a_lot_of...

t=trackviewnodes;n=t;deleteTrackViewController t n.controller;gc()

my life has changed since.

Looks like Cleaner is'nt too optimized doing it's stuff than...
You might give the author a hint how he could clean the note tracks with this line in a more optimal way...

Hi @sergezinskiy

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums, it looks like you are visiting as a new member to the 3DS Max forum. I want to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk Community!

It may be that the link is dead, maybe try this scene cleaner, or this garbage collection function.

Let me know if you need any other help!

If you use V-Ray, there is a bug somewhere with the data leak after merging objects into the scene. I have found a work around. In the problem file you have to save V-Ray render settings to the renderpressets file (.rps) and than load render presets from this file. It could be another preset file though. After you loaded render presets, save your .max file and you will notice that the file size is decreased.

Million thanks for your help. It works well.

My file was 3.5GB reduced to 2.4GB. It works better now. I ran the scripts again, but in 2nd time it gives an error message.

Is there any way to decrease the file volume more?

Thanks again for your help.

If you have the latest Max 2023, enable compress on save and it should reduce the file size even further (Saving takes couple of seconds more BTW)

Hi,

The link above is dead. Please visit the link for 'Scene Cleaner' provided by Hagen.deloss:
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-forum/3ds-max-file-size-unreasonably-large-slow-open-and-save...

Or alternatively here is a direct link: https://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/cleaner
(Individual Maxscript code solely for cleaning Notetracks, please read description):

struct s
(
	tTooltip = "3ds Max tends to automaticly save notetracks in your scenes that are comments for animationtracks.

However these notetracks can become quite numerous and dramatically increase the size of your scene and make saving process extremly slow.

So it is a good idea to keep an eye on these automaticly created notetracks and clean them from time to time.

Remember that you will import notetracks from other files if you are using xrefs.
Cleaning just the scene doesn't solve the problem, you got to clean the xref aswell or you will import the notetracks everytime you load the xref.
	",

	fn count =
	(
		try (numNoteTracks TrackViewNodes.Max_MotionClip_Manager) catch ("")
	),

	fn clean =
	(
		try
		(
			trackViewNodes[#Max_MotionClip_Manager].track = copy trackViewNodes[#Max_MotionClip_Manager].track
			gc()
		)
		catch()
	)
)

Always save a backup of your scene file, just in case, when using 3rd party scripts.

Regards,

Darawork
