3Ds Max 2025 random crashing

Hi everyone,

I'm using 3ds Max 2025, and I've been experiencing random freezing and crashing issues, particularly while navigating the viewport. I've already updated all my drivers, including the BIOS, and even performed a clean reinstall of Windows. Unfortunately, the problem still persists.

I also noticed similar behavior affecting Chrome webpages would randomly freeze and crash. Disabling hardware acceleration  seems to have resolved the issue for the browser -but not sure for next days if its gonna happen again to the broswer web pages- , but 3ds Max continues to crash frequently, even when working on nearly empty scenes. The crashes occur without any error message or autosave attempt, just a sudden freeze and shutdown during viewport interaction.

Has anyone encountered something similar or have suggestions for troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing, as I'm sure you suspect, something is bumping into Max that it doesn't like. These are hard to figure out without knowing how to analyze crash logs. I'd suggest you reach out to Max Support directly and send them a crash log.

Before the Forum was redone, we had some permalinks about how to do that, but they are gone now. Below is something I saved; maybe it will help you.

Thank you for your reply.
I was initially suspecting a crash caused by either plugins or drivers. Then I considered the mouse driver and the high resolution monitor I have -Apple studio display monitor-, so I went ahead and installed it . After installation, the driver optimized various settings like corser speed, and since then, the issue has stopped occurring. I’m still not entirely sure how everything is linked to the problem , but installing the mouse driver seems to have resolved the problem.

Thank you for replying back indicating how you solved it. That will help others. People write frequently and are angry that Max is crashing frequently even with simple scenes. It's almost always a conflict with something else and not a Max flaw or there would be 1000's of posts. Unfortunately, these kinds of conflicts are very difficult to track down. I'm glad you solved it, and it's just something else I'll remember to remind people of.

AI is definitely a problem when it comes to taking work away from all of us, but maybe in the future it can be a helper and scan a machine and find what's causing the crash by expertly analyzing a crash report. That would be really helpful.

Yes, I agree 3ds Max typically doesn't crash without reason. Most crashes are usually triggered by external factors. For example, using very high-resolution monitors can sometimes cause viewport lag, which may lead to minor issues. It's important to systematically track down the root cause to find a proper solution.

For the benefit of other readers, I'm using a SteelSeries mouse. After installing the official driver, the software prompted me to adjust the mouse settings, overriding the default Windows settings. Once I completed that setup, the issue seems to have been resolved.

Regarding the crashes themselves, the main problem was that there was no crash report, 3ds Max would freeze for a few seconds and then shut down unexpectedly without any warning. If I was lucky, autosave would have captured some progress.

Since installing the new mouse driver, I've been monitoring performance closely. So far, there have been no sudden crashes.
