3ds Max 2023 slow viewport - Bug Report

Hi,

3ds max 2023 viewport lags. It freezes for half a second of more on every start of orbit or pan.

It was an isssue before max 2016 and now it is back.

This problem does not occur as much in max 2021.

I testes the same scene in 2023 and 2021 (fully updated). 1.6 mil polys + a lot of cad blocks.

Ryzen 5950x, 128 Gb Ram, Rtx 3060 12gb.

Everything is updated. Win 10.

Gpu usage jumps to 30%, Gpu ram is used in 20%, Ram usage is around 25%, cpu is almost asleep.

max 2023 does not like lines, cad blocks or groups.

I have to use "cad cleanup" script to make it usable, but then i loose instances between blocks. Even then is works really bad.

Mike

Today i tried to install recomended driver for max 2021 (for 2023 there is no recomended driver for rtx 3060)

It was Nvidia driver 461.72. it can't be installed on fully updated windows 10.

"max 2023 does not like lines, cad blocks or groups."

That could be truncated to "max does not like lines, cad blocks or groups.".
Max also cannot deal with Ellipses or Ray lines.

Would it be possible for you to open the CAD drawing and explode all the blocks?
Whenever I use CAD dwgs in Max this is what I do, and the viewport is a whole lot quicker as a result.

Yeah, they are already exploded and unlinked, but still viewport is slow as hell.

Most annoying thing is that max 2023 is SLOWER than 2021.

It would be nice to have vieport like in FREE TO USE Blender, but autodesk is focused on useless new features.

Hi,

I suggest you try this script, and look for 'Link Composites'. These straggler type entities sometime remain after initially linking Cad or Revit files, and then breaking the link (binding).
Note: If you still have referenced or linked files do not remove them, as it will remove the 'live links'.

You don't understand the problem.

max 2023 has slower viewport than max 2021 - this is the problem.

I am also experiencing very laggy and slow viewport performance in 2023.1. My machine has a recent i7 processor, a 3080 and 2080 TI, and 96 gb of ram. I'm also running Nvidia studio driver 512.96. The performance is much slower than 2021. Any help is appreciated.

Same here. It is for sure slower to navigate the viewport.

@darawork

The free version of SiNi Tools has a great tool to remove cad blocks and groups.

EDIT: Also Nvidia studio driver is usually pretty bad. I try to avoid it.

For a long time I could not understand why I had constant microfreezes of the viewport - even if I created a teapot and started to rotate it - FPS dropped to 5-10 despite the fact that I have a 3090 video card. Here's what helped me - try reducing the reporting frequency value in mouse settings. For example, reduce it from 500 Hz, as I did, to 125 Hz. The problem immediately disappears.
