3ds Max 2021 Unwrap reset bug

Hello.

I found that bug in max 2021 only. 2016, 2018, 2020 are okay.

Unwrap resets all changes when I enable polygons subobject mode with "Show end results" or hide some polygons in baseobject. Even when baseobject topology did not changed.

This is pretty severe bug, because you can't undo lost unwrap changes.

Even worse, you just have to move some vertices around, to loose all UV-edit`s in Unwrap UVW.

This makes 2021 release almost useless for me.

Please report this bug here.

There's also a bug with Render out UV template too.. the two might be linked, but the problem arises when you reimport the texture you made with those UVs, which then become shifted and doesn't match the UVs of the model anymore.

I reported this a while back and am also finding it a real show stopper. My latest find was that just copying an object will reset its UVW unwrap. It's a major issue to me.

Still not fixed in the 2021.1 release.

I'm starting to wonder if this bug probably isn`t reproducable on the developer/QE end? I just saw the UV webinar, where the presenter shift-cloned objects with the UnwrapUV-modifier (using 2021 release) and there was no problem?!

Is this even logged?

That's really worrying. We're about to start work on our next game, and its unlikely we can move our team to 2021 with this issue present as one of our key workflows is fundamentally broken. As I explained in greater detail in my bug report, it appears related to editing modifers under the uvw unwrap, even when no topology change has been made. For example, stack a push mod, then unwrap ontop, then edit your push value by an amount and note that the unwrap above is reset. Do this is any version prior to 2021 and this will work fine. (In my gif example, I had a chamfer turned off underneath - this might be why my uvw reset on copying, where it didn't in the webinar.)

Our key workflow that will stop us is related to having 2 uvw channels for lightmaps. We have our texture unwrap on uv1 and then a second unwrap above on uv2 for lightmaps. The critical issue is that when we make edits to uv1, we lose our uv2's, they are completely reset. It's a really painful bug and I'm really surpirsed it hasn't gained more traction.

Still broken in 2021.1 release. Can't use a non-destructive modifier based workflow with this bug as it destroys the UVs.

Hi @68451, @Anonymous, @Anonymous, @Anonymous , and @Anonymous,

I happened upon your posts and I wanted to thank you all for this thread! I really appreciate you documenting your findings here for us.

I'm sorry that you've been experiencing troubles with the UVs resetting in the Unwrap UVW modifier, and I reported this immediately to the 3ds Max development team (in addition to any reports you've submitted).

They have been able to reproduce the issues noted, and have logged them as higher priority items for the team to investigate at this time.

Thank you again for your posts, if I hear more I'll try and circle back on this as well. 🙂

-Dominique

@Anonymous I hope you've been doing well recently!

From my understanding after speaking with the 3ds Max product team, it looks like a fix is currently available for this issue within the 3ds Max Beta in the most recent build. -- This fix will also be available in a future public release as well. 😊

In the meantime though, please feel free to join the beta community to work with the new build by signing up here: 3ds Max Beta Sign-Up.

Thank you for the follow-up!

Hi @dominique.bouthillette, thanks for your reply.

Is there any expected release date for this fix please?

I'm afraid I don't have time to join a beta program and test software that I've paid many thousands of pounds for, and I'm feeling some frustration that a software breaking bug that has not been present in any release before is taking so long to resolve. I appreciate your communication in this matter, but becoming part of a beta program is not a resolution to this issue.

Kind regards, Sean

Hey @Anonymous, understood. 🙂

So while we can't publicly say dates for any potential releases, the beta is under NDA, which is why I suggested it.

If you sign-up you can go there to get a better idea of what the timeline looks like for fixes (and features), not necessarily to test. If you'd like to test in the beta, that would be great, but it isn't always required (even if the sign-up survey asks you to).

We always welcome discussion and feedback there, in addition to testing the software, as it is run directly by the QA, development and 3ds Max product management teams. Thanks again for your help and follow-up on this thread Sean, I really do appreciate it.

Best,

Dominique

Hi @dominique.bouthillette,

Thanks for the update. I've signed up to the program to see what the roadmap looks like.

Thanks for passing my feedback to the dev team and back to me.

All the best

So, I just lost about 3 hours of work from this bug.  Unwrapped a bunch of different objects only to go back to the first ones I unwrapped and found half of them to randomly be reverted.  Sometimes to random points in my unwrapping process.  Some just completely reset.

I find it a bit unbelievable that a bug this huge is sitting in your 2021 release, unfixed since June.  I appreciate the team paying attention to users, but this really should be fixed right now.  You don't need to release a new Max version every year if you can't ensure gigantic bugs like this making it in.

Not being sure if my unwraps will randomly go away makes 2021 unusable.  And honestly knowing this bug is in since June, there should be a pop up warning telling users not to use 2021 if you plan to unwrap your objects.

I was excited for Max to finally have Face Weighted normals built in.  But those are also super buggy.  I've had Max crashing on my randomly while using them, probably 20 times.  2021 is clearly a Beta version, and should be labeled as such.

Hi @dominique.bouthillette

I can confirm that this issue is fixed in 2021.2. I have tested it extensively and works as expected 👍

Thanks for your help in this matter,

All the best in the future!

Hi, I downloaded the trial version last week and it looks like the problem with the unwrapUV persists in 3dsmax. I lost a lot of work due to it. I feel that's weird and a big issue. How can I do?
