3DS Max 2019 File archive failed (code 1)

Anonymous

Hi, kinda new here, but unfortunately I'm having trouble and can't find the right solution.

I'm trying to archive my file, but the error, file archive failed (code 1), keeps popping up. I have tried the suggested fixes on the knowledge.autodesk site, looked at other threads, disabled anti virus and ran as admin. Nothing has worked so far, but I saw something about cmd.exe being blocked being the issue. However I don't know what would cause that besides the anti virus which I already tried disabling. Whenever I press save on the archive file, the cmd.exe window pops up really quickly and then disappears the next instant, followed by the File Save Error.

Any help is appreciated! (this is on my personal PC btw)

Hello @Anonymous

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums, it looks like you are visiting as a new member to the 3DS Max forum. I want to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk Community!

I'm curious if your file path is rather long? There is a windows character limit of 256 for folder root paths, here is an article documenting a few other issues that would cause this archive warning to pop-up.

Please keep me updated on how you decide to proceed, and if this article doesn't help solve the issue:D

Hi Hagen, thank you for the welcome!

Unfortunately I wish that were the case, but the amount of characters are well below 256. I tried shortening it as well just in case it was a weird bug, but nothing changed; I also tried the many other attempted fixes listed in that article. I went so far as to scrapping everything and trying again with a brand new projects folder even, but no luck.

edit: I seem to be getting the same error on different project I worked on

Hi @Anonymous

Do you have a scene that I can test this issue on? What version of 3DS Max are you using? Does your scene have any 3rd party plugins installed and are trying to archive within your scene?

I also want to check, are you having issues saving the scene manually too? Or is this an isolated issue with just the archive scene tool?

Hi Hagen,

I can get you the scene later today; I'm still pretty new to the program, is there a preferred format you'd like it in? The version I am using is Maya 2019, and no I am not using any 3rd party plugins.

I have no problem saving manually, so it just appears to be an issue with the archiving.

Hi Hagen,

Sorry, but I'm not sure how you want the scene. I would send a zip but the archiving tool is broken for me; so is there another way that you'd prefer?

Thanks

I'm sorry I didn't respond more promptly, I was travelling and your response must've slipped under my radar.

You can either include all your scene assets in a zip folder and attach it to your next message, or try just attaching either the basic .max file or an .FBX file 😄

I would also recommend updating to the most current update version of 3DS Max, which is update 2.  You can do so by navigating to the manage products & downloads tab in your user account profile. All the most recent updates should be accessible when  selecting the 3DS Max dropdown, under updates and add-ons

Hi @Anonymous

I wanted to check back and see if you got a chance to look into providing me the files you mentioned earlier this week? I'm also curious about your archiving tool, does Max throw a warning when you archive? What does that look like?  It would be super helpful if you could add a post with how you decide to proceed, and your results. That way other Community members can benefit from your process 😄

Hi Hagen,

Sorry for the late response, been busy with school. I've attached a project below, hopefully it sheds some light on things. As for a warning message I get nothing popping up besides the code 1 error and cmd.exe isn't open long enough for me to catch a look at the code. Is there a log file hidden somewhere that might be able to show exactly what's happening?

As for additional troubleshooting I've tried purging my computer of all autodesk related software and folders, but it doesn't seem to solve anything.

thanks for the additional information! Have you been able to archive other scenes using the archive tool on your personal machine?

I was able to archive the scene you provided without issue, but that may be because I don't have any texture files linked up in the scene you provided...You can try detaching all the texture files in your scene and then try to archive...process of elimination to narrow down the issue

Does this issue happen no matter where you try to archive to (desktop VS archive to C drive etc?).

I think the best route is to send a screencast video if this issue persists. Since I can't reproduce the archive error, it might be an issue that's local to your machine/circumstance.

Have a good weekend 😄

Hi Hagen,

Sorry again for the late response. Unfortunately the archiving tool does not work on any of the scenes I try to archive. I still get the same code 1 error message. As for textures I don't have any connected to the scene I sent you, so by the sounds of it it might have something to do with my PC.

I've tried saving to both of my two drives, and I've attempted archiving to my external drive as well, but the archiving tool seems to still fail.

I'm not sure I'll be able to send you the screencast video this week, but I'll try to get it out to you Monday if you don't mind.

Thanks for the additional information! I think it would be most useful to get a a DXdiag file from you, which will give me a full list of your computer specs. Here is an article that walks you through how to do this on Windows 10.

This sounds like a real pain, I hope we can get this resolved so you can carry on with your project!

Hi Hagen,

Here's the DxDiag file; let me know if you still want that screencast!

Thanks

Thanks for the system specs! Hmmm, it does look like your C drive is pretty full (23 gb remaining) but I'm sure you aren't trying to archive that large of a scene...I hope (if your scene is that large I have some workflow tips for you hahah).

If you can successfully archive a scene using another machine, I think we will have narrowed down the issue enough to say that Max doesn't want to archive because it "thinks there isn't enough hard drive space". This is just an educated guess, and it could be a UI issue instead (maybe resetting your user profile back to default can help if cleaning up some disc space doesn't).

Hi Hagen,

Sorry for the delay, but unfortunately resetting the user profile doesn't seem to have worked. As for the C: drive, I know it's pretty full, haha,  but I don't see that really being an issue as 3dsMax is installed on the 😧 drive. In addition, the project sizes that I'm attempting to archive, they're not even breaking a megabyte. To be honest I've just been making test projects, adding a simple primitive, and then trying to archive it. I've been hesitant to work on anything at home due to this archiving tool issue.

At this point I'm just getting frustrated, so is there another way around the archive tool? Would zipping an entire project file for transport just be easier, or would it break something if I were continue it on another computer?

Thanks!

Okay so first, this is most likely unrelated, but there is a new graphics driver update for the geforce 1070; here is a link to download that.

If you are able to grab all the assets from the scene you want to archive (model, textures, and any externally referenced files), you can transport the scene wherever you want, and then archive using a different machine. Before you do so, just make sure you have re-mapped all the paths to the new computers locations. Pretty much make sure your scene is set up the way you want it to load after someone un-archives the scene.

If, for some reason you can't do this, feel free to send all the scene assets to me in a zip file, loose, and i can map them and archive the scene for you.

I have looked in our internal database, and file archive failure is rare, and hard to reproduce, so I don't think adding this to our internal database is going to do any good in this situation.

Hi @Anonymous

I wanted to check back and see if my previous suggestion of using a different machine to archive your scenes assets proved successful? If you can archive your scene on another machine, then I believe the issue isn't correlated to any specific scene, but has to do with something on your personal computer.

I had the same problem even with empty scenes. It was solved running 3ds Max as an Administrator.
