3ds max 2019 drag and drop merge stops working after a while

Hello there, At our company we have been using max 2017 for a couple of years now and are looking to upgrade our max version. We have been trying max 2019 which works great except for one (for us) huge problem. After working on a file, about an hour and an half drag and dropping other max files doesnt give the merge popup and only file > import > merge works. After looking on the forums and google I havent found an answer that works for us.

  • UAC set to never notify
  • 3Ds is not in admin mode
  • Viewport is not disabled
  • Set the security settings on the 3ds max folder to “full control”
  • deleting the ENU folder

The only thing that helps is restarting the scene which isnt an actual solution and can cost a large amount of time depending on the scene. This occurs and different PCs with different harder, one AMD CPU and one with an Intel CPU, both have NVIDIA GFX card but different variants.

Both PCs have max 2017 and 2019 installed, using V-ray with forest pack pro, railclone and floorgenerator plugin.

problem occurs on small and big files and both local and network.

For now we will be testing max 2020 to see if it is stable and this problem occurs. If anyone knows a solution that would be great and we can start rolling out 2019, we prefer using this one due to the maturatiy with its service packs and updates from third party plugins.

With kind regards,

The DWanimations team

Hey,

We have exactly the same issue. It works just fine at the very start and stops working after a while.

Only restart helps. We looked at some solutions online although nothing seems to be fixing it.

I'd appreciate if you look into this issue.

Cheers

3ds max 2020 is far from a good build. random crashes, freezes and now this. i can´t even drag and drop a file anymore. all that on a clean Windows installation with up to date drivers.

Try drag and drop to the menu bar (File, edit, Tools, etc..) instead of the viewport.

Same problem with 2019 and 2020.
merging is taking until 1 hour to happen or stop working after freezing.
Also by saving, sending for render in the the render farm or by closing the file.
I hope there is a solution for that...

I fixed this by UNCHECKING 'Run as Administrator' for 3ds MAX 2020.  I checked it to fix one thing, and then the drag and drop broke.

Exactly the same thing here. Has happened since many version ago and still going strong in max 2020 w. latest service pack. So frustrating... would be nice if Autodesk acknowledged this bug? Or maybe they have in a different thread?

thanks! This actually works for us in max 2020! Would still be nice to having Autodesk fix main bug though.

I have the same issue. By default, the shortcut was unchecked from Administrator rights. I somehow understand from 2019 version (before that, I was working on 2016 without having this issue), that it's connected with the auto back, because when I decided to cancel it after I couldn't drag and drop files anymore. Still, I'm not sure what is making it, just an observation. I'm working on 2020 now, and the issue persists.

Please Autodesk, fix this.

Hi @chrissmario ,

Thanks for your comments here. I'm posting this thread discussion in our internal 3ds Max developer support forum and will see if one of the devs can comment on what may be happening here. (I haven't heard of this behavior from copies of Max what aren't running in Admin mode.) If you're still encountering this, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi @jon.bell ,

Thank you for your reply! I'm glad that you will examine it more closely.
About your question, yes, I'm still having the issue.
