3ds Max 2017 now remembers perspective view!??!?

WHY?!?!?

 

Where can I turn this RIDICULOUS change off?

 

Seriously - the new UI makes everything illegible (all too bold white white WHITE text) - the scene explorer is now even WORSE - everything is so much slower, duplicating objects (using any method) takes AN AGE. . . and now THIS fundamental and basic change to something I've been doing a certain way for nearly 20 years. . . . why? how does this help? who asked for this? who decides to change these things?

 

Why not make 3ds max better instead of changing stuff nobody wants changing?

Why not make it faster, more reliable, and easier to model in - instead of adding stuff nobody needs?

 

How do I move an object 5.3metres?

How do I rotate an object 16.5degrees around a certain point?

How do I make a copy then 3 copies evenly between them?

How do I move an object parallel to one of its own edges or faces?

 

Fundamental simple things - easily done in other software. . . impossible in max without scripts or plugins.. . even then it's a faf.

 

and NOW you change a simple behaviour that's existed for over a decade.

 

 

WHY?

 

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

It says (Not Responding) but I'm not getting the usual GREY WINDOWS OF BAD PROGRAMMING. . . . . .  

 

I can move the ATTACH LIST (so funny) window. . .  might still be working. . .

Compact Material Editor.. . .  another funny window... . why can't I make it wider?

 

My hand is moving the mouse - I'm clicking on the edge of the window. . .   won't move though. .. ..    funny. . . it is the 21st century isn't it?

 

I cant see what most of the materials are.. . the text cant fit in that tiny bit of the UI allowed for names. . . 'terial #236578 (Standar' is all I can see. . . . 

 

Multi-sub Material. . .  I've got a few in this scene with quite a few sub materials. ..  why can I only view 10. ..  look.. . my modern monitor can easily fit in another 9 or 10. . .  loads of room.. .  enough room for a MOVE LEFT button.. . .  I can move up and I can move right .. . UP I understand. ..  as there's only one up and multiple downs. . . . but I can only move right? Lots of room for a left button.

 

Hey - I apply materials from a library to the scene. . . won't work on multi-subs. . ..  why's that? Won't take long for you to write something to parse the multi-sub? I, and countless thousands of us, will have to spend days chopping up models and reapplying single materials before using a library to update the materials? or you could  write a couple of lines of code? Is it that simple? 

 

OK - hang on. . .. just check if my ATTACH LIST has crashed again. .. . .

Good to see that Layer Explorer appears in the place I left it when I open Max.. .   shame the material editor and render setup still don't automatically open.

 

Oh hang on. . ..    Layer explorer has opened up in vertical format, as the scene explorer, and with EVERYTHING expanded.. . . .   hang on. .. just let me get this back to how I want it, every time I open max. ..  bear with me.. hang on.. .  .

Condensing multi/sub materials. . . .yes I get this kind of problem a lot. . . . 

 

So I can paste instanced materials within a multi-sub. . . but then I have to merge the object with another object for the instance to collapse to a single copy of each of the instanced materials. . .  then delete the extra little bit of geometry. ..   but this could be just a simple button couldn't it. . .   instead of me using a trick to do that.. . .   

 

and try finding that trick as an answer to the problem anywhere on the internet. . . you won't find it.. . .

marc, As with everything in this prehistoric software there's always a better 3rd party solution.

 

check out RappaTools 3:

It has a "one object" function the simply attaches all selected objects together and is far quicker than the max legacy code.

 

If you use max you need Scriptspot, just about every function in Max has been improved and enhanced by third parties, there's a few attach scripts there if you don't want to pay for RappaTools.

btw don't waste your time with the Autodesk Ideas forum, it's just a rehash of the old UserVoice (conveniently deleted) where AD ignored the top requests for 6 years, it took 4 years to get quad chamfers.

Hello @Anonymous,

 

In the future please make a new thread for each issue.  Thank you very much for that.  I'll do my best to answer your questions.  

 

1) This viewport behavior is a bug fix.  This is how Max worked in the past.  It makes a lot of sense for a scene where the render view is locked and it needs to be passed to other artists.  If someone were to change the camera view to top and then send it out, the top view would render because it replaced the camera view.  Most people I know in production are happy about this.

 

2) You can change the UI colors to anything you want.  If you don't like white, change it. Customize->Customize User Interface->Colors->General UI Colors->Text.   If you don't like the bold nature, check out MS ClearType settings.  

 

3) There are many ways to move an object exactly 5.3 meters.  The easiest is shown below.   Set your display units to meters first.

4) You can rotate an object around a certain point the same exact way, just set the pivot where you want to rotate around and then right click the rotation button and type in your degrees.  It's worked like this for as long as I can remember.  

 

5) You can make a copy of an item with 3 copies evenly between them with the Array tool.  I have more information here. Use the right side where it says "Totals".   You do have to nudge the slider a bit as the spacing can change minutely, holding down ALT helps there.  All in all, simple to use.  

 

6) Attach List is a bit slow, you have a point here.  

 

7) Applying materials from a library that are multi-subs does work. I just tested on 2014 and 2017 just in case I wasn't aware of an issue.  All fine.  I have no idea what this is about, I can't repro this issue and I tried for a while.  Corrupt users settings?  

 

8) For me, the horizontal layer manager setup is saved between sessions with no issues.  It is saved by default, but for some reason not on your machine.  User permissions most likely.  For layers, my layers are never expanded and it's not saving between sessions, so that is a valid point.  

 

9) I don't really understand what you're asking in post 7.  Couldn't you just select those Mat ID's and just change them?  I must be misunderstanding.  

 

10)  You cannot delete the currently selected layer in 3ds Max.  To delete a layer, make sure it's not the current layer. 

 

11)  If you cannot rename a layer, it's probably because you have more than just that layer selected.  (Such as select Children.)  Make sure only the layer is selected.

 

12)  Select by name.  Scene Explorer is a bit slow, I prefer the selection floater.  Old school, but works great and is very fast.  Chances are the problem is that you have thousands of objects in your scene, still fast with selection floater.  

 

That covers most of your issues here.  Please create a new thread for each issue in the future.  I am happy to help you in any way possible, one issue at a time.

Hi Alfred. . . thanks for all the responses - I really only wanted to get an answer to 3ds max keeping the perspective view as a 'thing' instead of it merely being a perspective 'version' of whatever view you were in. . . which could be used to reset any viewport rolls with a quick front, snap extents, perspective. . .. all of my other gripes were mainly pet peeves I used to humorous effect to fill time whilst waiting for a reponse - silly me!

 

I'm not that bothered by most of the things I wrote down. ..  frustrated with the Attach stuff obviously. ..  but, you know, I get by.. .  .

 

I've obviously scoured the forum and you would appear to engender genuine affection and respect for your helpful answers .. .  and a few of your friendly responses did make me think again about some of my funny moaning. . . .  so I hope you won't mind if I have a go at explaining myself a bit more - I'm not being catty or narky (good words!) - but simply trying to explain myself, and the world I come from, in relation to 3ds max as a piece of software I have to use daily. 

 

2, yes - maybe my WHITE WHITE WHITE comment doesn't explain what I mean quite as well as it should. I've designed websites and user interfaces for large companies - creating complex systems that work in a very confined space - but they are successful due to intelligent graphic design. The icons are good - just new and unfamiliar - and whilst some of the 'illegibility' of the new interface comes from it simply being new (well, if you've never used ableton) a lot of it comes down to poor contrast between different sections or headings. ..   which all blur into one as they are all incredibly uniform. I shall do as you suggest and have a go at tweaking it myself - but can't help but feel, with my experience, that the UI is poor, and that the out-of-the-box experience should be optimal for the greatest number of users - which means a good basic level of legibility and differentiation between headings/sections/body etc. Strangely the old interface is a lot easier to read.. . switching between the versions only highlights what a uniform blur the new UI is. I hope some people unfamiliar with modern technology will benefit from your ClearType suggestion.

 

Responses 3,4 and 5. . . . . I thought these were all quite funny. . .    maybe this is the reason why 3ds max is still the hardest piece of software to get to do the simplest things - and a lot of people will use 3ds Max doing the simplest things over and over and over again. ..  it's the simplest things that make up the core of any interface - they MUST be easy to do - they MUST be optimised - they MUST be simple. Moving objects. . . rotating objects. . . snapping objects. . .   Here's an interesting bit of software - relatively new of course - I dunno - maybe they've patented typing values in as you're doing operations. ..  https://www.sketchup.com/

 

Again - when designing the UI for large online retailers that sell tens of thousands of different technical items. . . you get used to making everything as simple and quick as possible for the user - process management theory - ask a five year old to work out the least number of steps to do anything. . . .  they will do EVERYTHING quicker than you've just suggested. ..  in fact, they would have designed SKETCHUP - which, at the basic, hard human/computer/information-input-interface level, is far superior to 3ds max. 

 

Now that I've been using 3ds Max 2017 for a little while - I have to say I find that it is a great deal better than previous versions. . .  I can actually fly about the scene with some of the joyous abandon of the good old days. .. . . scroll zoom and orbit. .. . they WORK again!

No problem at all, I totally understand and I just feel bad when I know someone is having a problem.  I want to help in any way possible.  🙂  Thanks for the kind words and I don't mind if you explain greater detail at all!  My goal here is to listen to the customers and do what I can to help, log issues, change processes to enrich the customer experience, or bring big issues to my superiors to be looked at.  I really do appreciate if a customer is willing to type a long response because it gives me an insight into what can be improved and I will do whatever I can to make it happen, in whatever time frame is possible.  So really, I want to thank you for taking the time to share these thoughts, it really does mean a lot to me. 

 

I have seen quite a few complaints about the UI for 2017.  I don't have a lot of experience with UI matters so I have to defer to your and the devs expertise about what is considered right and wrong, and it does sort of align with what I have heard from other users.  I do use the light interface which to me makes it easier to discern between headings, but I do have to agree with you that some of them run together, at least in the dark UI for my eyes.  I do think the old UI is easier to read, and I (on a personal level) don't believe an icon with no color has any place in a UI unless there are only 3 to 5 buttons like a phone might have.  The command panel is especially tough for me.  I have logged this issue based on some concerns I've seen in another thread as an improvement request.  The cleartype will allow you to AA your screen fonts differently in Windows and is actually really helpful in general.  I used to not use it at all but now I can't live without it.  🙂 

 

I do like sketchup, it's a cool piece of software with a very cool name.  It's a shame that the exported geometry is so messed up and hard to work with, it's the only thing I think needs an improvement there.  But it really does create things very fast and I even like the model/mannequin when you open up a new scene because it gives an immediate sense of scale.  It's hard to bash it though for the price, and I think it's quite an awesome app.  There are free plugins for it that can clean the scene before export and merge like materials or separate things and cleanup edges, wonderful stuff!  (Clean3 for example.)  A lot of my viz projects come in from Sketchup.  

 

There are 3 blanks at the bottom of the Max UI which replicated those areas I had mentioned where you type in values, so you still have that option if you want another method.  There's a button to switch between relative and absolute transform modes as well.  Since the UI has these things exposed it may not be too hard to script up a tool that works more like what you want, or floats where you want it.  

 

2017 is growing on me, and I think they devs have some really cool features in the MCG and Data Channels.  There are a couple plugins I use a lot that were never recompiled for 2017 which is a shame, but I do like it a lot.  Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me and letting me know what your thought process is.  I really appreciate that you took the time to do that, thanks again!
