3DS Max 2017 hanging on render end or cancel

Hi,

Issues with Max 2017 (latest), Vray 3.6 (latest), Forest Pack 5.4 (latest).

With scenes containing forests we are having issues with Max becoming non-responsive for up to 10 minutes or more when a frame is completed rendering or we cancel it part way through precalculation.

Since upgrading from 2015 to 2017 we have been having constant problems. We have now lost over 2 weeks worth of billable time due to these issues. Autodesk should not release versions of half arse software that is not cheap!!

Thanks

As Francisco Penaloza put you're scene together using a photo editing program once you render out a series of still images

Hello @emma,

I have replied to your thread here a couple days ago, please see that thread.  Thanks.

Hi Alfred,

What is ultimately your advice for this issue? I read the other thread that you referenced, but that specific problem wasn't addressed there. I'm having an issue with an animation where frames are taking an extra 5min to finish rendering and it took 10 min to cancel a frame. Considering that our frame time is set to 5min this is a big problem for our schedule. We do have a lot of railclone objects in the scene and a couple forestpack objects for cars, but itoo seems to blame v-ray and 3ds max, at least in this thread. I've posted in the Chaos group forums as well.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks!

So I think I might have answered my own question. I narrowed it down to two objects that are using the RailClone fence preset. It's an aerial rendering of a large industrial building, so there's a lot of fence. It has geometry for the chainlinks, so it's super overkill for that distance from camera and the amount of fences we have. I'm just gonna make a simplified version and see how that goes, but I'm guessing that will solve the problem.

First, thanks for coming to the forums with this issue!

It sounds like you came to a similar solution that I would've suggested, creating lower resolution objects per render depending on camera angle is a great way to optimize your renders.

Using projected textures for a fence within a wide angle shot, or trees with less mesh density for pulled out environment shots are all good tips. You could see about converting those meshes to an editable poly object, and then applying an Optimize Modifier onto it.

i hope you get your scene renders out in a timely fashion, best of luck with the project!

Replacing the detailed RC segment with a simple plane has done the trick! Normally we do stills, so scene optimization isn't as much a part of our routine as it would be.
