3ds max 2017 freezing

Hi,

i have a 3ds max 2017 installed on my computer. Since i remember its freezing for me every 3-10 minutes on average, sometimes when i change resolution on viewport and also on other random cases which i dont recall performing a specific action.

When i say freeze i mean that the program stops responding but not crashing, just the cursor keeps spinning as if its working but nothing happens no matter how much you wait.

I am using a DELL PRECISION M3800 LAPTOP WITH i7-4712HQ 2.3GHZ CPU QUAD CORE, 16GB DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz, 128GB SSD, 4K UHD 3840x2160, TOUCH K1100M 2GB DDR5 AND WINDOWS 10. I recently updated to SP3 and all graphic drivers (including clean driver setup).

Im really frustrated from this freezing, i tried to look for similar issues to try solution but without luck...

Valeriya.

Hello @valeriya.sandonata and welcome to the community,

Freezing like that can mean system problems on occasion and I checked the hardware compatibility list and your card isn't showing up on it.  There may be some features in your current display mode that the card doesn't support.  Can you please try a different display driver mode in 3ds Max for me?  DX9 perhaps?  Thanks for trying that!

Hi Alfred,

Thank you for your quick reply.

The graphics card i am using is a laptop model, and it seems to appear here:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?siteID=123112&id=18844534&results=1&stype=graphic&produ...

This is the closest information i could find for compatibility but i guess it refers to 3ds max 2016?

But i will try to run the program with different display driver for sure and i will let you know of the results.

Thank you,

Valeriya.

Hello @valeriya.sandonata,

I did notice that as well for the 2016 list.  There may be a feature in the DX11 mode that it doesn't support so it didn't appear on the 2017 list, but usually these sorts of issue can resolve with a different display mode.  If that fails we may take a look at your event viewer logs to see if something is odd there.  Thanks for keeping me in the loop!

Hello @valeriya.sandonata,

I'm seeing more and more activity about this issue on various threads.  I want to add your information to this thread and log all these problems in once place.  You've listed just about everything already here, can you please list the maker of your graphics card?  (I know it's a quadro but I just wanted to verify the manufacturer.)

EDIT:  Also, please list your current driver version.

Thank you and best regards,

Hi Alfred,

I only know that its NVIDIA® Quadro® K1100M. I have no manufacturer information

unless you know of a way to look for manufacturer.

As for the driver version is Nvidia 375.86.

I didnt have much time to use the 3ds max since we last spoke. From the little time i did use it it

is still working very slow and not responding for short periods while changing quality from standard

to high quality or performance. But it didnt happen to not respond completely like before. Later today

i will work on it for a few hours to see for sure how it responds for a working session and i will let you know.

Valeriya.

Thank you for the update @valeriya.sandonata,

Some people have seen improvement with Windows updates, and I wonder if you had an update that partially helped here.  The delay switching from standard to high quality is normal as it rebuilds your shader cache.  It's possible that there are some materials which aren't compatible with high quality mode.  If you'd like I can create a private folder to upload your files into and check them personally.  Please let me know if you'd like that and I'll get right on it.

Similar problem...?

I've been working on a model in 3ds Max 2017 and having no problems. Then, suddenly Max started to hang (mouse wheel spinning endlessly). If I wait, it will either keep processing forever, or if I try to close the program, then it will freeze up the entire system and I have to use power button to force shut down. I cannot find any point of consistency in the hangups - no one particular command or circumstance. It just happens within a few minutes of opening the file. I tried several different files. It only seems to happen with somewhat larger files, however, the system was able to hand these exact same files easily a week ago. And it has happened with relatively small files as well. Just locks up randomly.

I did hardware scan, virus scan - didn't find anything. Tried reinstalling latest version of Max - didn't help. And checked for updates that may have been installed since the time it was working properly - nothing. It just went from perfectly fine to pretty much un-useable. PLEASE HELP!

System Info:
Alienware 17 R4, WIN 10 HOME x64-bit,  ver. 1607, OS Build 14393.693, i7-6700HQ 2.6GHZ, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

Hello @Anonymous,

If Max ever locks up a computer entirely (meaning, CTRL ALT DELETE doesn't work to bring up the task manager) then it's a system issue.  Max is technically built for Pro versions of Windows, so it's not 100% compatible with Home versions, so that might be part of it.  (Although I had one user swear it's fine on Home, it's technically built for Pro as shown here.)  It's likely that you have a driver problem on your machine somewhere.  One way to look for problems is to use the event viewer logs, if you want to attach them I'm happy to take a look.

Hi guys,

May be my suggestion looks like a novoice. but give a try.

Check your autoback saving time frequency. (While using large file, giving 3 or 4 minutes interval make the system behave differently)

Try using graphics mode from default to open GL. When we are using big architectural model we face this problem and the open gl saved us many times)

Just give a try.

Thank you

 Thanks for the replies!

@Alfred.DeFlaminis Yes, it seems to be a system/compatibility issue. Although, I'm still not sure exactly what it is/was. I'll post event logs to see if you can see anything. Note, the problem started on 2017-02-23.

The odd thing is that it was working fine for several weeks and the problem started rather suddenly. I'm wondering whether a Windows Update altered something in the system...? I think the freezing may have been triggered by Auto-saves, however, I didn't suspect this before, because I was able to manually save the file, prior to it freezing, and the save worked fine and only took a few seconds. Is there something different with auto-saves that could trigger a problem where manual saves are not?

Subsequently, I uninstalled/re-installed Max and then had a bunch of permissions errors (like not being able to open files by double-clicking) and was still having the freeze issue, although, when freezing, I was now able to use CTRL ALT DEL to open the task manager, where I couldn't before. But, as before, as soon as I tried to End Process, it would again lock up the system completely.

Possible Solution?!?
In the process of trying to resolve the permissions issues, I turned OFF "run as administrator" and changed to Compatibility Mode for Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and it seems to have solved the freezing issue!  ...at least for the past 30min.

Would still love to get more feedback/analysis on this, just in case it happens again. Lost a ton of time on it. Probably should upgrade to Win 10 Pro.

Cheers!

Excellent idea @Anonymous, I should have suggested that myself.  Kudos!  I do have an article here about some things that can help with Windows 10 issues, it's a pretty good read.

The system log has many permissions issues in it, so I think you're on the right track.  Using the compatibility mode can help with those in many cases, as you've noted.  The application log does have a lot of Occulus entries in it.  If you are using Max you might want to unplug it in the off chance that it's causing some kind of IRQ conflict with your display driver.  (Small chance, but many errors for Occulus so might as well try.)  Otherwise the only things that jump out at me are some kind of Alienware FX error that seems to conflict with .Net.

.Net is a huge part of 3ds Max so it's possible the conflicting .Net versions within your system could cause some instability, but one of the main features of W10 is that it handles those updates automagically.  As a result it can be difficult to update it manually, but not impossible.  It's hard to say if this is the cause, but maybe worth trying the repair tool regardless.  I think between the compatibility mode for Vista and the article linked in this post you should be in good shape, but please let me know if you continue to have issues.  Thanks for the informative posts as well!

EDIT: I have removed the event viewer logs attachment from your post to protect your privacy.
