3ds Max 2017 constant freezing

As the title says, I have been having problems for a while with my version of 3ds max constantly freezing randomly, some operation make it freeze more often than others. The conform tool, for example, freezes it for ages every time. The freezing ranges from a few seconds to a couple of minutes which is very frustrating as it slows down my workflow.

Hello @Eznaex,

I'd like to help here if possible.  Can you please post a screenshot or screencast of this in action?  What kind of polycounts on these are we looking at?  Have you tried to reset your user settings?  If not, please try it as it's been known to fix random strange issues.  Thanks!

Best Regards,

Screenshot of what? nothing shows up when it freezes except for the 'not responding' on the window bar. The poly counts are irrelevant to the crashing. It seems to crash whenever I perform specific actions or sometimes just at random. What I did discover though is that it ALWAYS crashes for about 30 secs every autosave, which I have now set to every 30 mins because it was becoming a pain. Before I reset the user settings can I ask what that does exactly... does that mean it will reset everything including all the plugins and custom taskbars I use? (took me a while to set them up)

Hello @Eznaex,

What update for Max are you using?  Have you updated your graphics drivers lately?

Hello @Eznaex,

No problem at all, happy to help.  You can find it in the control panel as shown in the image below.  If you haven't installed any updates then that will likely fix this problem right up.  You can find them either through the Autodesk Desktop App or at Manage.Autodesk.com.  For 2017, the latest update is called Update 2.  Each update contains all the fixes from previous updates, so you only need to install the latest one.  For users not on subscription, SP3 might be the only one listed.  For students I believe you should see Update 2 however.  Please try that for me and thank you so much for doing so.

Thanks, didn't even know there was an app. Updating it now, the service packs are only max 2016. I'll update when I have used it for a bit, to see whether or not it has fixed it.

Hello @Eznaex,

I see, thank you for the update here.  What is your current graphics card, please?  Lastly, do you see anything strange in your event viewer logs

@Eznaex ,

Hi -- I was just reviving this thread to see if you still needed help on these issues, or if updating your copies of 3ds Max fixed the crashing issues you were having. (3ds Max 2017 came out around the same time as the Windows 10 Creators Updates, which caused problems in a lot of software -- Max included.)

Please let us know, and we hope to hear from you soon!
