2016... the good, bad, ugly...

Curious to know what everyone's thoughts are now that we're using it.  This is after 2 minutes:

Good:

a) seems to load a bit faster

b) viewport performance is definitely better

Bad:

a) still can't effectively import my 2015 settings.  That's all of them.  You know, so I don't have to manually turn off ViewCube, folder preferences, etc.

b) max still doesn't remember 3dsnap settings when opened

Ugly:

a) 3.44 GB installed without the fluffy crap.  You can't choose not to install all the language stuff, which is almost a gig.

b) backburner appears to be the same dustware.

I share the same views. Not to mention a serious bug that breaks the usability of Scene Explorer (I've just created a thread for this). Smiley Indifferent

Unfortunately I can't test the new viewport performance since my graphics card is pretty old (though I'm getting a new one soon to test it with Max 2016).

I'm planning on doing a new project with the new Max 2016. Let's see how stable it is in real-world situations and how many more bugs we can find Smiley Happy

Unfortunately, I have few 'real world scenes' I can use at this point, until all the plugins are in place.  Though talking with Ed at Cebas, it would appear the new paradigm doesn' t break everything, which is another good.

I don't think I've ever expected a new release of max to be usable in the first release, not until SP1 at least.

Another bad: layer manager is still stupid.  Haven't tested if Nested Layer Manager works flawlessly yet.

Kris.

i tried using the A360 Rendering but this crashed 3ds Max to an error report

i'm sure this will be very limited to what is in your scene

Just played around some.

The first things I noticed in hour of play:

+1 Open Material Editor is far faster.

+1 Editable Poly now has hard/soft edges.

-1 New Render to 360/ Gallery Buttons take up space

+1 Can delete those render to 360 buttons

+ 0.5 Selection Hilighting is kind of cool... not sure if keep on though

+1 Users have option of turning selection hilighting on/off

+10 MCG. I can already tell that most of the people I interact with will never use it. But I will probably spend a lot of time in MCG over the next few years, I am sure.

Can't bring in old scenes yet because of plugins yet (not quite as compatible as copying plugins folder over), so can't test viewport speed comparison with 2015 yet. Looking forward to seeing what it can do, though.

Great job overall Max team.

-10 The **** "Big. New. Maya." Ads all over the Area and the mention only of Maya on the Mudbox features page and the far bigger promo of Maya at NAB. Although the Max team is lifting my spirits, the Autodesk team in general is not sending the same promising vibes to the Max nation. It would be less annoying if the Maya forums were full of "Big. New. Max." But no... it's Maya all over the place. So we'll just have to see where it goes from here on out. Whatever the case, I'll stay a customer as long as Max keeps progressing... but don't expect us Max users to be diverted to an alternate product ever.

Used to have Maya a few years ago but could not get myself to like the interface. I am so used to modeling tools in max that switching is hard to think about. ( Learning Curve)  But if that were the case, is there a crossover upgrade from Max to Maya on subscription?

I wouldn't switch to Maya because of that. I'm just sharing my own personal irritation with any attention AD gives Maya over Max in DCC. I want Maya to succeed as a competitor to Max to push Max above Maya in film/tv because Max is what I believe in. So really you can ignore my final paragraph as general grumpiness (defensiveness towards my pal Max). But honestly, I should have left that out because I think AD deserves some credit at this moment in time for, I believe, actually delivering some of the things we've been asking for for years.

Max 2016 is shaping up to be a really cool chapter in the world of 3D. So as annoyed as I am with anything AD does in favor of Maya (like NAB and ads ATM), the reality is that Max is simply a work of art that just got better. Besides, the Mayan calendar ended a couple years ago... so all the current Maya hoopla is just some rumblings from the afterlife 🙂

Really thought I was going to enjoy the pre-selection stuff, but turned it off within minutes... maybe with a larger scene i'll enjoy it more.

Prespective match doesn't appear to work with the new camera? I'm not having any fun with it at least... seems bugged. also, i started to draw out a line object within the viewport i had matched, and it started to change my view as if it were a vanishing point. it also doesn't save my camera matched viewport if i close max and reopen

Everytime I close 2016 i get a runtime error...

alt x doesn't work for me

sigh

thats within 1 hr of installing, but i still have high hopes that all of the above is somehow something i did................. : /

F***ing hate them all. i try and do something that i want to do, and it f***ing doesnt want to. it removes my textures/images just because my laptop has a d drive used, and my usb at tafe is d drive so it f***s it up. it wont connect lines/edges to vertices to fil the gaps up, and caping the borders just makes it have invisble angles everywhere. i try and u inset on a black plane on a box and it stuffs itself up by adding the edges connect to it making it impossible to this build im doing.

"unfortunately declined :-("

Fortunately, I learned long ago that at least AD names those folders reasonably transparently, and they can be deleted en masse with rest of the useless stuff.

@krisYah, I know... but why we can't choose language when installing... 😞

Anyway, if someone interested here list of folders which can be deleted or archived if you want use only english language.

@RGhost77 ... the same reason M$ and other megacorporations do or don't let you do things, or wholesale change the UI, etc.  They assume/presume that they know best as to what the user wants/needs, based on either hubris or some small and/or inappropriate sampling of people.  These companies will make changes based on some obscure rationale, and generally stick with it regardless of what blowback they get.  Let's just hope to miscellaneous dieties that AD doesn't decide to make its software profile "tablet friendly"...
