fbx import in groups

I exported a fbx from Revit.
Now I get it in Max via Link Revit.
Now I have tried the presets for material, category and family type.
However, I cannot create a group after the import.
I want to do several imports and then I would like to place each import separately in a group so that I have an overview in the scene explorer.
However, in the layer explorer everything is placed under one layer.
Why can't I group the imports?

What I do to overcome this is to export by FBX of the individual parts I want. Yes, this creates 5, 6+ FBX files to manage but it works everytime for me. My process is to go into Revit 3D view, turn off everything but walls, export. Copy that 3D view and turn off everything but windows, export. So on and so forth. Works everytime.

From there, its just CTRL+G in 3dsMax. You can put them all on their own layer too, I typically don't.

If you're still having trouble creating groups, you may want to try importing the FBX file into 3ds Max as a single object, rather than linking it. This should allow you to group the imported objects more easily.

Alternatively, you can create a new layer in Layer Explorer and drag and drop the imported objects into that layer. This will help you organize the objects in the Scene Explorer by providing a visual separation of the objects.
