Hair and fur guide length easy modification?

Currently I am working on creating a "roller brush". In max, essentially what I am doing is applying hair and fur modifier to a cylinder and populating hair using a custom mesh (the hair is just a cylinder). Now, when I generate the hair its far longer than it needs to be. I am able, visually, to achieve the length I want but my problem now is that the guides stay the same. My objective is to animate this with the roller rotating and use dynamics to have the hair brush a surface as it passes under the roller, however it does not work correctly because of the guides being soo long. If I use the cut tool on the guides to cut them down to an appropriate length I am able to get the desired effect, but the problem I am having is getting it all perfectly round.
So my question. Is there a way to uni formally reduce the length of all of the guides at once, or do I need to just keep on the path I am currently on and use the cut tool? There are perimeters in the modifier that allow me to adjust the cut length, and the scale but these only effect the geometry of the hair itself, not the guides.
