Vault Network License Timeout

Is the network license timeout configurable with recent versions of vault? In the past, the timeout was hard-coded at 30 minutes; however, I *think* this changed with the Vault 2017 but can't find anything to confirm.   More importantly, is this configurable with Vault 2019?

@ryan

Try this from the Vault 2019 Product Documentation:  http://help.autodesk.com/view/VAULT/2019/ENU/?guid=GUID-0FBF43B4-0041-4732-85AC-6B58B175E16F

Also, if you have Items and /or ECO's enabled, the Vault timeout basically goes away as these cause the server to check for updates every 5 minutes.  So, the server is never idle, and the license never times out.

That link is for the web server timeouts.

I am asking about the network license timeouts.

Ryan,

@cbenner's response still applies. If the client is open and checks every 5 minutes, it remains active every 5 minutes and will not timeout and therefore will not release the license. Also, if the user is inside of Inventor and has logged into the Vault, it will consume and license and as long as the user is active in Inventor, the Vault license will not timeout.

To answer your question, since Vault clients now get a license from the client the same way Inventor does, it uses the same methods to define a license timeout.

Unfortunately this is about as clear as mud 😞

According to @cbenner, the timeout does not come into play if you the vault contains items and/or change orders as it checks every 5 minutes.  However @ihayesjr you seem to imply that the 5 minute check is actually from the Vault Explorer client, regardless of whether there are items and/or change orders.

Also, I suppose that we have to consider then whether we are talking Vault Explorer or a vault add-in.

Sorry, i've read everything a few times in this thread but I don't think I understand at all.  Can you please clarify?

Ryan,

My response was just an amendment to Chris' response. Let me try and clarify.

With Vault Professional, if you have Items & Change Orders enabled, the Vault client will check the Vault server every 5 minutes for Change Order notifications. This check will keep the Vault client active and it will not reach a timeout value higher than 5 minutes. Therefore the Vault client will not release the license.

If Items & Change Orders are disabled, the Vault client will not check the Vault server on a regular basis and therefore if it because idle, it could reach a timeout and release the license. There is a big BUT here. If you have logged into a Vault server using a Vault add-in, the license will be retained until the CAD application is closed. See one of the links in my previous response about this. Therefore, regardless of what happens with the Vault client, a Vault add-in once logged into a Vault server will not release the license until the CAD application is closed.

The timeout information Chris previously was talking about is a connection timeout between the Vault client and the Vault server. When the connection timeout has expired, the server will close all IIS connection associated with the client which will be re-established the next time the client communicates to the Vault server. This has nothing to do with the Vault license timeout.

To answer your question, since Vault 2017, the Vault client gets a license from the license server the same way other Autodesk products do, it uses the same methods to define a license timeout.

Hope this helps.
