Are you talking about Revit?
As far as I know, there is no "Draw order" command in Revit.

The buttons are called "Bring to Front", "Send to Back", etc. They appear on
the options bar only when you have a single element they are capable of
acting on selected. The set of elements they are capable of acting on is
very limited and does not include text or symbols.
Revit is apparently very new to this too. Good luck.

In the properties of the linked drawing, select "background".

sorry, what do you mean "properties"?
element properties? because there doesn't seem to be an option to select background.

If when you imported it you said "this view only", that option might not be
there. Otherwise, there should be something near the bottom that says
Placement (or something) with the options of foreground or background.

(Sorry if the terms aren't exact, I'm not near Revit today.)

We have talked to both our local reseller and the subscription help desk. The answer as of know is that there is no view order (send to back / send to front) for linked dwg and revit files.

There response as of now is to watch for this in future releases of the software. Which of course does not fix the problem you are having today.

What version of Revit do you have?

My Revit Structure SP3 does not have this option for linked or imported dwg files..

i have revit structures 2008, and similarly, do not have this option.
i will try reattaching the linked file and as suggested by Kate M
will look for the option of placing in the back ground. it would also be nice if you could set a transparency of a linked file
similar to xrefs in acad.
thanks

Make sure you don't say "only in current view" when you link in the DWG.

Thanks, that solved it
Now the sad thing i that autodesk subscription told me that was not possible when i asked them how to get control over this.

Who knows maybe they were thinking of linking revit files and not dwg files

What version are you using? I have Revit Structure 2008 and 2009 and neither version gives me this background option.

Thanks

In 2008 & 2009 - When you highlight the attached DWG file in a view, right click and select "element properties".
At the bottom you will see the Background-Foreground toggle.

Kate has given the completely opposite instructions to get this to work. When importing a DWG file, you MUST select "in this view only". Otherwise, the back/foreground option does not show up at all, either linked or imported. I checked it with both 2008 and 2009.

Yes, I have had the 'draw order' option available in the properties box ONLY when the cad file is linked with the 'current view only' option chosen.

It's a poorly thoughtout proceedure and it would be very helpful if Autodesk would solve this, and all the other visibility issues that make Revit so user un-friendly.
