Missing Surfaces.jpg files

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi all, for one way or another in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures I seem to be missing some default .jpg files in the /surfaces folder, it's likely the same has occured in the 'bumpmaps' folder.

I'm not sure how this has happened as this is a recent install of INV2017 after a random IT scheduled maintenance ruined my INV2016 on my workstation... It's entirely possible this has something to do with it, anyways besides the point.

Rather than me having to do an uninstall and fresh install of INV2017 and reconfigure it again (I don't have the time), I was wondering is someone could please make all the default files available for me to download so I can manually pop them back to where they should be.

So if anyone could please provide a location or can upload all the files from C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures for me to try and do this quick fix, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks

If you have access to the IV2017 download then you can find the textures in the directory where the installer resides:
<driveletter>:\PRDSU_2017_Enu_Win_64bit_dlm\x64\Components\IVV2017\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\IVV 2017\Textures

Ok, so I was able to access a pack of default surfaces image files and it turns out none were missing from INV2017, maybe some have been removed since INV2016? Or it may be another issue...

It seems to be only with some (still alot) appearances in the 'autodesk appearance library' and even then it seems to be a problem with linking to the surface image.

Not sure what setting I don't have right, but I've attached some images to help solve my problem.

Can't say i see anything wrong with your settings...

How is your project set up? maybe you're using an appearance library that references an old location?

Libraries.jpg

Also check if your project is using the correct design data under the "folder options".

(set to "default" it should use the path from the application options.)

The appearance with the error in your image is a document image, what happens if you update the styles in your document?

("update" styles is on the "manage" tab in your part)

The out of the box Inventor Surface are BMP, the fact that your using JPG is what is causing you a problem

Yes you can use other formats like PNG, GIF, TIF etc for surface BUT if/when it comes to sending your file/s to anyone no one want to be mucking around adding different format/s for the surface files that already exist in another, the default BMP format.

Any company's that you send to will more than likely send the files back and tell you to correct the problems

Z420 Screen Shot.PNG

NOTE

A) THE CORRECT FILE LOCATION C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures\surfaces

B) THE CORRECT INVENTOR OUT OF THE BOX FORMAT BMP

I suggest that to correct your problem/s that you change the INCORRECT JPG format to the CORRECT, more widely used, BPM format with the same name

Here's what the project is telling me:

Surfaces5.png

Also I tried creating a fresh project and tested out the material appearances on a new .ipt and it was getting the same issue.

The only reason I have .jpg files in there is because that's what is called out to be missing. So I copied the .bmp files and changed their extensions to .jpgSurfaces3.png

In the same folder is the original .bmp files. The .bmp files make no difference.

IV is TELLING YOU the the surface named below the red box is missing, looks like you don't have it at all, is the file originally yours or one sent/give to you ? If its been sent/given to you your going to have to ask them for the surface JGP and copy it into C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures\surfaces for it to work ,or sub it with one of the BMP files or as I said if you pass this file on to anyone else their just going to have the same problems as your having

The file is a default INV file and it is only and example of one of the many default files missing as detailed in my 3rd post in this thread. I think you need to have a re-read of that post to understand it better as it seems you are not understanding what I have previously wrote.

I just checked if i could find that "Plate - Mesh 1" appearance.

It is part of the "Autodesk appearances" and references a different location for the textures, see screenshot:

2016-06-02_0810.png

Can you check if you have the texture at that location?

Wow, that's a big font...
Assuming you just replied to the last post and didn't direct this at me...?

I do want to note though, the textures in that "Autodesk appearance library" use mostly .png and .jpg for their texture images.
These are also "out of the box", but differ from the Inventor textures in not being .bmp's.
So the texture in dshev199's case should actually be a .jpg.

@Anonymous did you ever get a solution to this? I'm seeing this with one of my customers with a default Inventor 2017 installation. When you hover over the error, it doesn't display the path of the missing file. Instead it just displays the file name of the missing file. Bloody weird. I've tried all sorts to fix it. Their setup and folder structures are the same as mine on my machine. The exact same textures are in each folder. But on theirs Inventor can't find the textures.

I have the same error here. I tried many things and I can't fix it. Here, the error occured when I installed the 2017 version (from the 2016) and then I imported the configs.

Scott,

I am having the same problem here with Inventor 2017. It seems to have started after I used the Uninstall Tool to remove Inventor 2015. It seems to have removed many of the texture files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\Textures.

I copied the missing files from another system here but Inventor still can't seem to link to them automatically. I fixed the link manually but when I tried to send the effected parts to the Vault I get error messages that it couldn't find the missing texture files and canceled the transfer.

Regards,

Steve Smith

This was my fix and there is most likely a better solution. I am working in 2018 IV and it was looking for .png files.

  • Application Options File
    • Texture Folder - C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Textures
      • Inside that folder has a file named surfaces. Not only are they .bmp the names don't all match the images different appearance images are looking for.
    •   C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\Textures
      • This then has folders 1, 2, and 3 each with a Mats Folder. These images have the correct names and are .png.
    • I made a folder holding all of these images from all 3 of the Mats folders with no duplicated names. (Just a folder on my desktop)
    • I then took all these images and placed them into the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures.
  • Then tested and worked for me.
