I've come across this error message while trying to shell an object. I am also unable to split the piece, and I have a feeling this lack of volume is the cause of all my problems.
The file was created using a large number of x,y,z coordinates and opens as an apparently solid Inventor part. Two parts were loaded this way, and I had no trouble with the first.
Is there a way to fix this?
I'm using Autodesk Inventor 2014.
Welcome to the forum.
It looks to be an imported part. In my experience a lot of imported parts are nothing more then surfaces with no real geometry. In order to shell a part there must be real geometry. I would try using the thicken command first and then once this command is used you should be able to shell the part.

Notice at the top of the browser that it says Surface Body(1).
And doesn't say Solid Body (1).
Can you zip and attach the original file here
or
the ipt file?
Is the zipped original too large (before importing into Inventor)?
Is the Inventor file still too large with the EOP in a rolled up state and zipped?
The file limit is much larger over here http://www.augi.com
trick with large part files #1. Open the part, drag the EOP (End of Part) icon to the top and save the file. Your part will now be at most 350KB if that. When one gets the file all they need do is drag the EOP icon back to the bottom. The sad part: it only works with parts and not assemblies 😞
I figured it out! I was able to simply stitch the entire object and it then came up as a solid body. I'm not sure why that didn't work before.
Thanks for everyone's help!

When opening the IGES file, before selecting Open, click on Options and check the Import Options, there might be an automatic stitch and check available.
