New Computer

Hello, I am currently looking for a new computer to help speed up Autodesk Inventor. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Dual-Core Processors. I would like to know if they are worth the extra money or even if Inventor needs that kind of processing power. I know my new computer is either going to have 3 or 4 Gigs of RAM. I am currently using Inventor 10. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Absolutely I wouln't buy another computer without dual core. Here are
the specs of a system we just bought and it is REALLY fast! Buy AMD if
you can, they seem to be smoking Intel.

AMD64 Dual CPU 4600+
WD 73gig 10KRPM SATA x1
Samsung 160gig 7.2KRPM SATA x2
Asus A8N SLI-premium
2gig DDR (*2x 1gig DDR chips)
nVidia Quadro FX1400 128M PCI-e Video
Windows 2000 professional
En-light ATX case w/extra case fans
550Watt Power Supply
Plextor 740A DVDRW-burner x16/x8/x16
Philips 200W6CB 20” LCD monitor

Well for one XP is a resource hog.
Second that is all we have in the office so we wanted to stick with it.

It has to do with the turnover time, we will completely skip XP and go
into Vista in a year or two

Wait...you call XP a resource hog but are going to go with Vista?

Might want to rethink that. Have you see all the eye candy crap that Vista
has?

I am currently making pulse magnet systems that consist of multiple layers of complicated helices. Then on top of the wound magnet are dozens of extra parts. The machine I am now is getting really bogged down. And the future assemblies are only going to be getting larger. On some drawings it takes 20 minutes for me to open/create a new detailed view. My computer now is a P-IV 3.06 Ghz with 1 Gig of RAM. I was just looking for some advice and unfortunately we have a contract with Dell. Since the Dual-Core is "Hot Stuff" I thought I was ask about it and Inventor.

That sounds really awesome. I have only heard good things about the AMD. I would have to see if we can change our current supplier. Thanks for the post I would love to switch to that type of computer, but I will have to wait and see.

I never said I WANTED to go with Vista. But Windows 2000 is starting to
loose support. Soon programs won't run on it. I went to install a
program the other day that would only run on XP.

We will just be jumping up to the latest Version.

And yes I have seen all the extra crap that Vista has, but hopefully the
machines will be "fast" enough to efficiently handle it!!??

Write your own logon.bat file that maps your drives and add it to your
startup.

It sounds like you have the same machine as our old one. Our new machine
is easily twice if not 3 times as fast.

So you say that the dual-core(from Intel) and all that nice stuff that comes with it would be worth it even thought it is not as fast as an AMD?

Well I won't say anything about the intel chip, but the dual core AMD is
well worth the money. I think that entire system with XP small business
software was $4000 CDN. Take away that $750 monitor and your at $3250,
not too bad if you ask me.

And I thought Dell was going to start selling AMD, haven't they started
that yet?
