Inventor using CPU instead of GPU (Inventor 2014)

Hi,

I have a problem: Everytime I want to render a scene with the visual style "Realistic" my computer is using the CPU for rendering (every Core of the CPU is fully loaded while the GPU-usage is at about 5%). So my question is, is there a possibility to use the GPU instead of the CPU to render a scene?

This problem only occurs when I have the graphics settings set to "Quality" or "Performance". When it's set to "Compatibility" it is using the GPU but I cannot put the visual style to "Realistic". Here are the Graphic-diagnostics:

I think the problem might be that Inventor is not recognizing DirectX 11 on the GPU and is trying to simulate it with this "VirtualDeviceDx11" on the CPU, but I have no clue how I can change it 😕

I uninstalled the onboard Graphicsdriver, because it used to use the Onboard GPU (although I turned it off in the Bios and in every options I could find). The Graphics Driver of the GTX970 are up to date.

Thanks for every help in advance 🙂

"Realistic" has an option to turn on or off Ray Tracing.  Check this setting.  If it is on, Ray Tracing currently (and sadly) does not render on the GPU.  I'm hoping in the future they'll support IRay like Max and Maya which does render on the GPU but we don't have it yet.

Thanks for the quick reply 🙂 When I disable Raytracing it seems like Inventor is using the GPU, although it is way overpowered for my small models^^ So I guess it really does not support raytracing on the GPU. Do you maybe know if Inventor 2016 might support it? I have read it is using a different rendering engine.

I'm not sure but I didn't see any mention of it.  This is what we should have: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-iray.html

Max, Maya and even Revit have it.  Not sure why they didn't go with that as Inventor already has Mental Ray integrated, I thought IRay would be fairly easy to implement.  We'll have to see what 2016 really has when it comes out I guess.

The only time GPU is used in Inventor is for your Model Environment model window (rotate, pan and zoom). Rendering uses your CPU in Inventor. The only software that I know that allows for selection of CPU and GPU is 3dMax.

@lkrenzler: Yes, that would be pretty awesome if someday Inventor could do it, too^^ But thanks everyone for the help, seems like I have to let the CPU do some work in the next time^^

inventor will not use those features

you need to look at 3ds max or maya with arnold to use the new ray tracing fuction
