HI All,
I brought in a STP file from a supplier. It opened it in Inventor (IV pro 2010), everything looks good. The file tree shows a number of BASE parts. The file has some unwanted geometry (removeable parts). I want to delete them. I was thinking I could Extrude (CUT) them away, but I keep getting errors. For instance "Extrusion could not be buit, Modeling failure in ASM, redefine input". Any ideas on how I could make this new IPT so I can delete some details of it?
Thanks
Bill
Check your direction of your Extrussion/Cut. The software has been known to Flip the direction.
Do the parts pass quality check (green chechmarks)?

Can you attach the original file(s) here?
Does Delete Face with Heal option work?
I tried the Delete face with Heal option. It seems to work, but there are so many faces it would take too long.
As I mentioned, I tried using the extrusion CUT on the part. Surprisingly it works in some areas of the part and not others. In certain areas I get the ASM error. In others it cuts fine. I tried using sketch planes and the part surface to place my sketch on for cutting. It just doesn't work for me in certain places.

I can take a look if you send it to jmather_at_pct_dot_edu
I suspect that someone from Autodesk will also come along and express interest in the file.
Hi Bill,
JD is right; there could be a modelling bug here, so if it's possible to send us the part that would be great. If the file is too big to attach to this forum, it's possible to send it to us via Buzzsaw. If you don't have a Buzzsaw account, please drop me an email and I can arrange one for you.
Many thanks!

Hi Bill,
I don't appear to have received your email; would it be possible to resend it?

Nothing here either.
Hi Bill,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I haven't received any emails yet; you could be right about the email size limit.
What we usually do for transferring sizeable data is create an Autodesk Buzzsaw account (which gives you a file-posting folder on one of our servers); if you'd like to go down this route, just drop me an email and I can setup an account for you, and send some instructions.
Alternatively, if you have access to your own FTP or web hosting site, perhaps you could post the file there? (assuming it's not sensitive data, of course)
Many thanks for your perseverance, it's much appreciated!

Running Inventor 2009 with a similar error. I am unable to extrude past the distance of the base part. Any idea's?

Here is one idea - attach your file here.
This isnt the first time that this has occured. Is there a proper solution to this issue, or would i have to submit a file everytime there is an error?
#1 - I don't see anything to extrude.
#2 - When I create something to extrude - it works fine for me.
#3 - You didn't run quality check on the import (no green check mark next to Base). (see post 2 of this thread)
When I run a Quality Check - I get the longest list of Issues I have ever seen on an import.
This part is missing faces.
