Emboss Feature

Emboss Feature

I think it would be great if Autodesk could make an Emboss feature somehow similar to the feature you have in Inventor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRAIIM4_KRI

It would be great if we could use this feature with text, sketch and imported svg files.

Thanks,

CA

Simple request. To have an emboos a sketch on a complicated/curved surface.

You can half do this already by taking a sketch and extruding but the trick is that if it's even a slightly complicated geometry, just selecting the enclosed areas is tedious and a huge pain.

I want to extrude/emboss text along the circumference of a cylinder such that each letter is pointing at the cylinder center point. Image below is a good sample, note the text E PLURIBUS UNUM.

See forum thread here: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/sketching-sculpting-modeling-and/curving-a-slab/m-p/5530562#M12173

The solution http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/sketching-sculpting-modeling-and/curving-a-slab/m-p/5530562#M12173 is very kludgy and if the individual slabs are very wide will lead to visible distortions.

This would be a perfect application for sketching on an arbitrary surface.and being able to extrude / engrave from there (and that would solvea lot of other problems at the same time)

Hi ,

I have produced an app that can create text feature (extrude sketch text) on the surface. Basically, it can place the text on any type of surface, however it is more a code for cylinder face. You can find the source code and usage at
https://github.com/AutodeskFusion360/SurfaceText_python

some known issues:
1. Because I did not find a python way to get fonts list of the OS, it requires the user to input the font name manually in this version
2. The code places the text at a default location in the parameter space of the surface, sometimes the first letter will be upside down. You simply tune the start position a little. I have not got time to check the exact reason.

if you are interested in extend the app, please feel free to edit.

I second that.

Fusion 360º needs this feature urgently.

For structural packaging design this will be a dramatic time savier for emboss operations.

Here are two more examples of the emboss tool in Inventor:

Just to be more accurate, I think this tool sould have the possibility to Emboss or Engrave, just like the Inventor tool.

You can already Extrude Text, so it's very similar to what is in Inventor... or am I missing something?

What is shown in the video, you can already do in fusion:

Make a box

Select text tool in the Sketch Menu

Click on the box surface. A new sketch is created. Click again to where you want to position the text.

In the Dialogue Box, input the text you want in . Choose size and font. OK

Right click on the text that is on the surface and choose push/pull

Hi donsmac.

Yes. In fact we can already do what he is doing in the video.

However, what I was looking for in this kind of tool was something like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zatIWDnyLXo

Besides that, in Fusion how can we do something similar to the "Wrap to Face" option when we don't have a planar surface?

Is there any workaround?

Thanks,

CA

Yes, what is missing in Fusion is the wrap or conform to face aspect. It's possible to work around this limitation if the face is not too far off planar, or if you use multiple sketches, or in some instances by extruding with a draft, but with Fusion's ability to create complex organic shapes this is definitely a missing tool. The more general case of being able to wrap a sketch to a face or faces would be useful.

I checked out the second set of videos. I missed them earlier. Yes indeed, this 'wrap to face' is excellent. Unwrapping projected geometry would also be very cool.

Hello Oceanconcepts,

I would say that, if Autodesk is not going to implement a true emboss/engrave tool, these tools are missing from the toolset:

1) Wrap or conform sketch/text to faces;

2) Select more than one sketch element at a time, when running the SplitFace Command.

I seem to always need a new/better dial.  Engraving on the outer perimeter of a ring with sequenced numbers (input variables: diameter of the ring surface, sequence: 0 - 100, mark every: 1, number every: 5 for instance) would be very cool, and as far as I can tell, very unique.  Mybe that's because it is impossible; I don't know.

Well, I think if you are wanting to emboss on a relatively flat dial, you can do that now, just not entirely within Fusion. Graphics programs like Illustrator have good ability to put text on paths, including circular. Then just converting to SVG and importing as a sketch should give you the ability to make custom dials.

We’re stuck, though, when you want to put that emboss on Dali’s watch wrapped over the edge of a table…

Interesting workaround. I'll give it a try.

Thank you.

Just to add this would make life vastly simpler for those of us interested in jewellery or any other decorative craft. Thank you!

yes please include the emboss function just like in Inventor
