My question is once your break a link between an Inventor 3D factory layout and it's Autocad dwg overlay can that link be re-established.
Also how does Autocad know what Inventor file it is linked to?

Unfortunately, once the link is broken, you cannot re-link the files.
We store some internal id of the linked file to remember what file it's linked to.
Please review a previous post of mine. Where I'm having a problem.
It seem like Inventor or Autocad has somehow lost the link between each other because of the errors I'm getting. When I try to update it seems like Autocad wants inventor to generate a New .iam layout file and is not accepting the current .iam as the correctly linked file.
I have never broken the link between the files and these are files I've been working with for months and never had problems with. I'm an using vault basic to store the files.
There might be a defect somewhere causing the link to be lost. We'll have to look at the dataset to determine what the issue is. Have you sent your dataset to Xuesong? If not, you can send it to me too.
And do you have the update pack and all the hotfixes applied?
