Filtering objects

I have been using AutoCAD LT for many years but have never understood the Filter command. It seems like it would be so helpful to be able to filter objects, but I can't make it work. I would like to be able to filter two different layers at once, and have tried following the directions in online help, but they are confusing to me. Does anyone have time to write out some simpler directions?

Here's what I tried: I opened the Filter dialog box (transparently while in another command), and set up this list:

**Begin AND
Layer = A-WALL-PATT
Layer = A-WALL-DEM0
**End AND

Then I hit the "apply" button. I went on with my command, and typed the word "all" at the "Select objects" line. AutoCAD LT returned "2248 found, 2248 were filtered out."

What did I do wrong?

By the way, I am really upset that AutoDesk now charges $65 per incident for technical support!
