Attribute extraction from a list of dwgs

In Acad2002, using the enhanced Attribute Extraction wizard (EATTEXT at the
command line)...

I am having difficulty getting attribute info from one common block that
exists in several .dwg files. I manage to select the dwg list okay, but then
the extraction wizard creates concatenated block names (the filename and
path of the drawing gets attached) for all but the first drawing in the
list. (where's the logic there? what's so special about the first dwg in the
list?) The result is that a common repeated block is now a list of blocks
with unique names that I have to individually select for extraction. And I
have to laboriously select the attributes I want to extract from that block,
each time that block occurs, even though each time I want to extract the
same attributes.

I can't be using this tool correctly. Isn't there a way to extract attribute
info from a list of dwgs, by just supplying the dwg list, the name of the
block, and the name of the attributes I want?

Thanks...

Hi Scott,
I've been trying to do the same exact thing without any luck also. Searching the board came up with about half a dozen other threads having the same difficulties.
I'm doing exactly like the help says but the only output is info from one file, not multiple files as expected.
Maybe we can get some help/advice from a board admin about this problem.

Scott an Kevin hi,

I didn't see the original question, but if I
understand correctly then what you need is Autodesk Map with its capabilities to
access and query multiple drawing files and extract from them practicaly any
information about their objects.

I hope this helps.

Arad

Hello Arad,
Thanks for the response.
Specifically what I'm trying to do is use EATTEXT to extract titleblock info (sheet title & number) from a block in numerous drawings to create a drawing list. Others are trying to create a BOM list, but basically it's the same task.
EATTEXT's help says when numerous files are selected, it will append the block name with a ~ & dwgname. In my case, this is not being done so it can only extract the info from one drawing.
Any help?

Well Kevin,

I am sorry, but I cant help you with EATTEXT. I
used it only a few times to check it out. Map does all this BOM reporting so
mach better that its not worth the effort.

Do you have Map or LDD?

Creating reports of any objects in your files will
be very easy.

Thanks for replying.
Before I consider getting additional software (Map), I'd like to confirm that EATTEXT CAN NOT do multiple files as documented.
Moderators in numerous threads about extracting attributes have recommended EATTEXT. Any moderator or other user have any success doing multiple files?
Maybe it is a bug as alluded to in another EATTEXT thread.
- thanks

Take a look at http://www.dotsoft.com/batchext.htm.
