Thumbnails in Windows Explorer no longer show .rfa files after installing Revit 2013.
The computer still has Revit 2013 installed, and thumbnails worked before installing 2014.
Thank you for your post. In this case with the thumbnail preview could be linked to the new content and files from the 2014 installation.
Here is the recommended resolution to your case:
1. Open the family file.2. Save the file to a new name, and click Options on the Save As dialog window.
3. Select the Source view that you want to use for the thumbnail preview, and check the "Regenerate if view/sheet is not up-to-date" box.
4. Save the file, and check if the thumbnail is updated.
This doesn't work.
Autodesk supplied Revit 2014 content also doesn't show thumbnails.
Thank you for your update.
Since we need more information on your environment, will contact you privately.
Thank you.
Just to cover all the bases here, have you restarted your computer recently? I have experienced a similar problem when opening/editing/saving a large number of files in a short period of time. Windows Explorer was getting overloaded, and simply restarting fixed the issue.
Hi,
Follow this link to a solution
ok. . . yes well I dont have 2014 installed but assumed there would be a Revit.Thumbnail.dll in the 2013 folder. But its not and might not be one in 2014 either?
I will keep digging, I got the same issue but never looked at it until now.
Anyone else have any pointers please shout 🙂
By the way show thyumbnails instead of icons in the advanced windows system settings is not the solution as its on, in my case anyway.
Hi. . .
try this
Open the command line (type CMD in the search box in the start/windows icon)
copy and paste this line:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit Architecture 2012\Program\Revit.Thumbnail.dll"
You should get a his has been successful msg.
Restart your machine
check icons.
Hello!!
I have try all of the solutions here and it' doesn’t work. And… I’m not only having problems with some families that doesn’t' show up on the preview window dialog box, but also, even if a family is showing the preview, ones i modified it, and save it, then it doesn’t show the preview neither, even using all of the ways suggested here to fix the problem. Please, is there any update about this issue?
I'm having this same issue and this thread does not yet have any working answer... what can I do to make file previews/thumbnails visible through windows explorer? Saving each file is not feasible because this is a problem with every single family file. I could see previews through 2013 this morning and now that 2014 has been installed all I see everywhere is the 2014 Revit logo instead of family previews. The company I work for downloaded the 2014 file directly from Autodesk so we have no CD to drag a .dll file from as other posts have suggested for earlier Revit versions. I've also checked the folders properties through windows explorer to make sure thumbnails are visible and they are. Please help.
This happens for me using the Upgrade_RFA journal script from Autodesk. I find it interesting that the only response from Autodesk is a redirect from another thread to this one, and the remaining comments keep directing people to address a Revit 2012 dll.....for a Revit 2014 thumbnail problem. I also notice that the thumbnails no longer work in the Revit file open dialog either.
I would be happy if someone could offer up how to add the "regenerate preview" to the journal script so I could test that.
Its ok all sorted.....
the "Revit.Thumbnail20.dll" file is in a different location to 2010-2013 Revit as per comments above.
found mine located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Revit Shared
simply follow Revit Clinic's advice (but use the new file path and file name) http://revitclinic.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/11/revit-file-thumbnail-previews-do-not-display-in-win...
and you should be good to go
no thumb nail like save, sync
on the solution Michael Bussere2 mentions of Opening of the family file.2. where is this in the family
