thank you very much. Just for my understanding: I have a family with 3 types and I want to assign to each type a differnt subcategory. But there is no parameter for subcategory like for example for material.
Let's say I have a Box which I want to show in three different ways. Later I want to export the file to autocad and assign for each of the three family types a differnt layer.

thanks again for your assistance.
I have three family types of a box. Later I have to export the revit file to dwg and each family type has to be on a different layer. For this I have to create one subcategory for each family type. With materials I do not have this possibility.
"Subcategory" is a property that can be applied to elements that are created locally, not to elements that are nested families. Therefore, for nested elements, the subcategory must be created in the nested elements' own family file. Then, load those elements into a host family, create a Family Type parameter, apply that parameter to one of the elements, load the host family into a project, create multiple instances of the family, each of them with its own family type value. Now, if you export this project to dwg you will have on the list all the subcategories that you created, and you will be able to assign a different layer to each subcategory.
"Then, load those elements into a host family, create a Family Type parameter, apply that parameter to one of the elements, load the host family into a project,"
Could you elaborate a little more on this part? I have flow arrows (detail item) nested into my air terminals that I would like to be able turn them off using a subcategory. The reason for this is that when they are linked into the architect's model, they want to be able to turn the flow arrows off, but still see the face plate of the grill. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

What you highlighted in red is entirely different from subcategories and not applicable to what you are trying to do.
More information about it is here if you are interested to understanding the use and the purposes of Family Type parameters.
There are several ways to get what you are trying to do:
1. Create a subcategory (lets say Flow Arrow) in the Arrow Detail family and assign it to the arrow, then load in the the main family and load the main family in the project. The Flow Arrow subcategory will show under Detail Items tree. Turn that subcategory off will turn off the arrows but keep the face plate visible.
2. No need to create a subcategory. Highlight the flow arrow in your main family and click Visibility/Graphics Overrides, you will see Coarse, medium, and Fine check boxes. Uncheck any of the boxes will hide the arrows when the views are set to that Detail level. For example, uncheck Medium box, OK and load the family in your project, open a view and change the detail level to medium then the arrow will disappear.
