I'm not sure if this is the cause but this is what happened.
My drawing locked up, while editing MText if that matters. I had to force it to close - rt click on taskbar icon, Close Window, said yes when asked if I wanted to close the unresponsive program. Since there had been other signs of instability I rebooted the machine.
I opened the drawing I had been working on and the Recovery Manager opened as expected. I hadn't done much since the last save so I dismissed the Recovery Manager. I then wanted to recreate MText I had been working on.
I mistyped MT and got MY instead. This was an unknown variable to me but seemed innocuous. However the next time I issued a QSave the SaveAs dialog box opened and was pointed to the My Documents folder. When I tried browsing to my drawing folder and saving under the current drawing name I got the - File exists and is in use - message. I could, of course, bypass this by saving under a new name and then overwriting the original file,
I looked at help for MYDOCUMENTSPREFIX and didn't see anything about it making any changes to the SAVENAME variable. So now I'm wondering. Did the drawing freeze and reopen cause the problem? I've never seen that before and I've locked up quite a few drawing in my time. Or is there something about MYDOCUMENTSPREFIX that isn't documented?

Which verison are you in? When I type MY I get an Unknown command in 2008 and 2011.
When I type MYDOCUMENTSPREFIX it returns the file path of the "My Documents" folder, with a (read only) at the end. So nothing to edit in there.

Sorry. 2012 sp 2.1.
I have the command preview (or whatever you call the variable that tries to guess what your typing in is called) on. So when I type MY it defaults to MYDOCUMENTSPREFIX.
I finally took the chance and tried to duplicate it and couldn't. I have locked up the drawing again and when I reopened it there was no trouble using QSave. So I may have hit one of those strange once or twice in a career combinations that caused the problem.

Don't know if I like the sound of command preview, I guess I'll have to try it before I disregard it though.
I have had "File exists and is in use" once or twice as I recall. I suspect it had nothing to do with the MYDOCUMENTSPREFIX, and everything to do with your lock up and crash. As you said, not reproduceable so just something random.

Found it. AUTOCOMPLETE. Controlled by AUTOCOMPLETEMODE.
I didn't like the sound of it at first either. The first time I tried it I turned it off in a short time. I don't remember what brought me back to it. Now I find it helpful in snagging longer commands without having to type in the whole thing or set up an alias for seldom used command. Basically the first three or four letters of any command will act like an alias. Some like the DIM commands need more letters typed in before you hit the right one.
I have dynamic input on and can select the right command form the list, using the cursor, once I've typed enough for the correct one to show.

New for 2012? I guess I'll get to try it in a year or two.

Yes. I just checked. It was available as a productivity tool or something for a couple of years ago. Which was when I first tried it.
