Render Elements causes a crash when I try to add a pass

Hi Everyone.

This started recently, it might be the addition of Deadline but though I would check in here before going to their forum.

Render Elements causes a crash when I try to add a pass, doesn't matter which render engine I try. Just started a few days ago.

Might have coincided with our company testing Deadline.

Thanks ahead of time

Mike K

We found a simpler work around that seems to be working on all machines impacted.

Right Click on the "start menu"

Click Device Manager

Expand: Human Interface Devices

Right Click on "HID-complient pen"

Disable

windows10_pen_not_working.png

You should see a down-arrow next the the icon. So far this has corrected all crashes related to the pen device.

This is NOT a wacom issue from what I can tell.

Autodesk will likely patch the issue when/if they extend support to windows 10. Many of the autodesk tools have not even been built on windows 10. I suspect it would take autodesk a little while to validate and qualify windows 10.

I should mention I found this issue by loading the crash into MS visual studio 10. Looked at all the dll's called. And one poped out that pointed to the pen device. An Autodesk rep suggested disabling the "HID pen" device. The moment I did that all crashing seemed to go away.

Thanks for the solution! I can't believe the issue was reported a year ago and still not fixed in 3DS Max.

Did all that and more, and Max 2017 still crashes upon the same bug. Cra-cra. It did fix it for Max 2014 though. It appears it only happens when I add elements with the Default Scanline renderer selected.

Cheers,

A.

Hello @all,

I'm catching up on this thread and I want to log this into the system, it currently does not exist there.  This thread is from before my time but I think I have a grapple on the issue and I have entered it into the bug logging system.  Did this fix by @Anonymous and @Anonymous solve it for everyone?

EDIT: Since 2014, 2015, and 2016 weren't made for W10, it's not a bug in a technical sense, and the solution posted here should be marked if this worked for everyone.  For people on 2017, please let me know if any of these solutions work for you.  I need to log it for 2017 on W10 since that is the only version supported under W10.

Best Regards,

Hi AJ,

tcomputerchip's solution worked for a while. I just had the problem creep up again so I tried ylustrat's solution and issue disappeared.  (I use Wacom tablet CTH-680)

EDIT:  Side effect of ylustrat's solution is that pen pressure is ignored in Photoshop, so not an ideal solution.

Thanks

Hello @Anonymous,

Can you provide more information, please?

Did you try all 3 of the solutions in the thread?  Which renderer are you using?  Does it happen with all renderers?  Does resetting your user settings help?   Does it happen on all files or just one of them?  Which OS are you on?  Thanks for the information.

I don't have a Pen or Wacom.

TabletImputService was stopped

HIDS was disabled as seen in screen grab.

It does not crash with these renderers;

  Quicksilver Hardware

  ART

  VUE File

  Redshift

Scanline is what I need to use, and that crashes

Crash happens with any scene, even just a new blank one.

Reset user settings had no effect

Running Win 10 Pro 64 bit

Thanks for the information @Anonymous,

This is strange.  When Max crashes, do you get a CER report window?  If so, can you please put your forum email address in there and I can look up the cause of the crash.  Thanks for doing that!

In the meanwhile I wonder if somehow W10 is blocking some .dlls or something along those lines, I've seen it a few times with W10 and 2016.  2016 isn't officially supported or certified for Windows 10, but I'll still do everything I can to help.  There is an article here that goes over some problems with W10 but I'm not sure it's perfectly illustrative of your issue here.

I have seen this come up once or twice with 3rd party renderers but it's pretty rare.  Do you have any other render plugins?  Do you use a 3D mouse or have any peripherals that plug into Max?  Just looking for info, and thanks!

EDIT:  I searched your forum email address and you had already submitted some CER's.  Thanks for doing that.  Looking into them now.

I have done several crash reports with this email.

I found discussion about this crash here;

https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php?topic=12948.0

Based on this, I removed the Redshift plugin and it now works.

Thanks for the efforts.

None of the solutions worked for me.

I have 3ds Max 2015 (permanent license). As soon as I add any render element 3ds Max crashes.

The problem started out of the blue, probably because of a windows update but I am not sure about that.

I uninstalled and reinstalled 3ds Max, but that didn't work as well.

I will format the windows to see if the problem will go away. I will write here if it works or not. Meanwhile, I wonder if anybody else is still using 3dsMax 2015 in 2022 and having the same issue.

screen.pngWindows reinstall fixed the previous Render Element problem, but this time as soon as I installed V-Ray this Autodesk.Max.Wrappers.dll problem occured. Solutions related to this problem (including re-install, dll rename, complete deletion of all 3ds Max appdata folders, .net repair) also didn't work, so I am reinstalling the windows.

Screenshot 2022-02-19 223803.pngAfter another fresh windows 11 install, I first actived .Net 3.5 from "windows features" than installed 3ds Max and Vray. I started 3ds Max 2015 in adminstrator mode and everything works fine now. Thanks.
