Exporting separate STL Files in the correct postion!

Hi, Hoping someone can help with this:

When I used FreeCAD in the past, I could export separate STL Files to represent different colored areas of my printed file. When I then imported them in to my slicer of choice "Slic3r" (as parts) the slicer would recognise the part was to be printed with the second extruder. that part would also be in the correct postion in relation to the other STL Files, I had exported of the same object.

When I try this with Fusion 360, I can export the seperate STL files from Fusion no problem, but when I then...
in my slicer import or add the second STL file it will place it in completely the wrong place and sift the first STL file also, so that nothing is aligned to print!

So there is no way for me to use Fusion with my slicer software, Can someone point out to me what I am doing wrong.

I dont want to have to change slicer software if possible

Thanks

Mark

Hey m.conaty,

Sorry to hear you've ran into some issues with exporting STL's. One quick question: What are you exporting for each STL? Are they bodies or components? Each component has its own origin, and this may be the cause of your issues.

When I perform multi-material prints, this is my workflow:

  • Create a "placeholder" component for each color/material by right-clicking on the top node of the browser and choosing New Component
  • For each color/material, drag the bodies/components you'd like into the corresponding "placeholder" component
  • Right-click on each "placeholder" component, and save that out as an STL

The two placeholder components in Fusion should have the same origin location, so the parts should all now have a common "home."

Let me know if that works!

Thanks Taylor,

For your reply, I will give that a try when using components.

I also found a solution when using bodies, in the save as STL dialog box there is a save bodies as separate STL files drop down menu item.
That kept elements in correct position for me.

Thanks for your reply

I have the same problem only with auto cad 2018. I'm trying to print my company logo (proactive printing) which consists of 3 objects (1 background, 1 p in blue, and 1 p in white). When I import the stl files it seems that all the files shift to the bottom right. Anything you can think of?
