User level parameters that get copied to new designs

User level parameters that get copied to new designs

A business situation a Fusion user might tend to have parameters they use from design to design which have to be entered whenever they create a new design.  Maybe countertop height, cabinet depth, plywood thickness, any standard parameter to that business.

I wass thinking that maybe those parameters could be entered at the user level and then copied when a new design is created, but probably not linked - the parameter could be changed within the design and it would only apply to that design.  But once copied to a design a change at the user level would NOT propogate to designs that were created - that might be too much magic and it would be too dangerous to ever update or delete a parameter.

A possible use for this would be if I bought a batch of material I might change my user level parameter to the exact thickness of that batch, so that new designs would use that thickness until I finished that batch, but once those designs were done if I bought a new batch of material for new projects I could tweak that parameter for new designs, but previous ones would have to be updated manually if desired.

This idea would just speed up the intial setup of new designs.

have a look in the API section there is a script in there to do changes to a design, where it brings up the main parameters what you change what's need then save as a new name, its really good for cabinet making stuff.

it lets you do one design for say a single shelf cabinet then if you need to change one parameter it lets you do that, be it timber size or what ever.

but a built in would be good instead of have to go find scripts.

in the same posting there is a dump user parameters to .csv and import .csv file for those parameters then it just assign to your model

I was looking to see if this was already in IdeaStation!

I totally agree, there are many scenarios where it would be useful to get the same set of parameters in any new design, but changes in values would be only valid in the current design.

For now, I have copied designs similar enough and changed values, but I would like to not have to copy and start anew.

Thanks,

Bernard.

I do a lot of 3d printing (FFF)  and I have a lot of printing related contraints in my designs, as minimal Wall thickness. different spacings etc. at the moment i have to  retype all of those parameters into each new design. Saving the parameters into a file also would be a nice feature as some of the parameters might depend on the used material.

@Spirou42 have a look in the API scection there all ready is a code to do what you wont, look under my name it's there some where

Yepp, i have seen the code and have used it already, but i consider this process a "work around". A load/save button accessing the clouds store or something like “pick user parameter from Design” -wich let me pick a specific parameter from any design in my project, directly accessible from the Parameters dialog would provide a much nicer workflow.

go over to the API section and ask for it to be done
