Start with a Component

Start with a Component

Hey all. After attending the Academy in August, I was made aware of Rule #1 - Start with a Component. It seems to me this should be a drawing preference to always start working in a Component.

I always jump in and start sketching, modeling and then realize I didn't start in a component. I can't be alone here.

I saw a post regarding this a few years back but thought it may garner some interest now.

Yes, I'm in the same boat. If Rule #1 is to start with a component, why does Fusion default to creating a body? If there is an advantage to starting with a body I would like to know what that is. I think for me it is just a matter of training myself to start with Rule #1.

I'm no expert on the concept. In my experience, it doesn't matter if you never intend to make a joint or... other things that require components I can't think of at the moment.

I have a similar request (Convert component to sub component) which is generalization of this. Basically what I'm proposing is that at any point in any level of the component tree, you should be able to convert the contents of the component into a sub component. So any point when you realize that you need to have a component, you can simply convert the work you have done so far into a component. I think it is useful to be able to do this at any point regardless of whether it is the first component or some other sub component that you are modeling.

For what it's worth, you can create a new component and the drag and drop your initially created body into that new component.

Yes, and you can use create component from bodies as well, but all of the history and sketches are still stuck in the original component which get to be more and more of a mess the more changes you end up making.
