Plates and thin sections

Plates and thin sections

Would it be possible to provide better analysis of plates and thin sections.

I do lots of work with steel plate and it sure would be great to get good stress

results that were dependable without having to use a huge number of elements.

Again since I work lots with steel plate non-linear bucking analysis would be very helpful.

I think what you're desiring are thin elements to represent thin component parts (IE 2D elements with modified stiffness matrix to emulate the plate thickness). This way you could have a single element to substitute an entire panel, on say a large vessel (boat), so rather than having an extreneous number of elements you have a couple hundred. The caveat is, however, that the deformations and internal panel stresses at local foci won't be available unless you increase the element count to capture it. In some instances this isn't so much a problem as the increase in computational power far outways the necessity for accuracy in the element.

Such a desire shouldn't pose any problem for AD as they already have such elements in the Inventor Profressional Suite.
