Multiple (More than 2) Selection Constraints in Sketches

Multiple (More than 2) Selection Constraints in Sketches

Currently, it seems like you can't select more than 2 lines (or any other sketch objects) and apply any constraints apart from "fix" to them. In the below sketch, the three lines are entirely undefined. You should be able to set them all equal, colinear, or horizontal/vertical without having to click on them one two at a time. In the case of 3 lines, it's not that bad, but if you had a complicated sketch with many more lines or other objects and you wanted them all to be equal, it would be much quicker and more efficient to be able to select all of them and hit "equal" instead of having to go through all of them two by two.

It would be nice to select constraints continuously. Currently it is nice to not have to reselect the type of constraint being used but it is not continuous. For example, if I have a series of rounds or circles that I want to make equal, I have to keep selecting back on a previous one to make them equal. It would be nice to implement similar to how PTC Creo works where you select the first entity you want equal to another and then you can just continue to select all the other entities that are equal to it without having to go back and reselect what you want it equal to. At least allow the preselection of multiple entities that can then have the same constraint applied. This is especially useful for setting items in sketches equal to one another.

Really both of these methods (multiple pre-selection and post-selection) should be supported.  I usually use pre-selection, but with a large number of entities that gets cumbersome, so then post-selection is easier.

I have four lines that should all be the same length, or all be colinear.  I can't select them all and add the relation, I have to select multiple pairs.  It would be very nice to be able to add relations to the group.

This may be just a time-saving abstraction rather than a really distinct feature; but it's something I run into all the time and takes more time in F360 than it should.  If this were solved, I think the relations the software gives them would still be composed of pair-wise relations, but the process would be much simpler.  Ideally the relation icons would also be distributed more cleanly (one per entity in the group rather than two for most entities) since the software would identify the pair-wise relations as belonging to a group.  Also, then if you broke one link in the chain, the other relationships would still exist even if the software had to re-configure the pair-wise relations.  Does that make sense?

Obviously there is a fairly small set of combinations of entities for which this would work.  E.g. N lines could get equal, colinear, parallel, horizontal/vertical (a different case since these are individual absolute relations); multiple circles could have equal, concentric...

Apologies, I realized this is thoroughly a duplicate of another post.  Please see (and vote!) here:

I was using the terminology of sketch relations (from SW) whereas F360 calls them constraints, so I hadn't found the topic while searching.

I accidentally posted a duplicate of this here: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/enable-group-relations-of-sketch-enti...

itigg is spot on that adding multiple constriants continuously is frustrating.  If you want two lines (or ideally 3) to be both equal and colinear, for instance, you have to select them once, add the constraint, it deselects it so you have to select them again and add the other constraint.  I have frequently encountered situations where I'm adding a sort of castelation (line segments down, right, up, right, down, right, down, etc.) to a sketch and want each segment to be of equal length, and certain sets colinear.  Pattern might be OK there, but not always.

Thank you for your idea - this is getting moved to future consideration.  It is now in our backlog and when work starts it will be changed to accepted.

Thank you,

Just thought I'd give this a bump. Any word on when this functionality might be added?

This issue of selecting 2 features at a time and applying constraints is really a SolidWorks flaw, let's not re-invent the competitors shortcomings?

popsDZZYs,

I think you might be mistaken. This is a handy feature to have, especially when making multiple lines equal, parallel, or colinear. I believe both Inventor and Solidworks offer this functionality.

Bump.... Really annoying not to be able to select more than 2 circles and make them all equal....  Wasting valuable time. 🙂

Bump. Please add this functionality.
