I encounter the same issue with sketch lines. Some form of differentiation is needed, either thickness, color or pattern. The issue arises for selected item within a single sketch. For example you can have a line and a construction line in the same space and it becomes difficult to select one over the other. Having the sketch elements highlight or glow as you pass over them may help.
Subtle color/brightness shifts for highlighting is definitely the way to go here. Thickening the line actually becomes detrimental in detail work as it's tougher to spot where the "spine" of that line truly lives.
