Improve decal positioning (allow decal center to be out of edge)

Improve decal positioning (allow decal center to be out of edge)

Currently there is limitation on decal placing: center of decal must be inside face. Often it is very inconvenient — you can't show decal part is far from it's center.

I suggest to allow decal center to be outside target face, so any part of decal may be shown.

The problem is actually worse than this; If there is a knockout in the face, it will block the movement of the decal within the face, making it impossible to get a decal into the correct position in certain cases:

I need to move the decal down to fill in the white space at the bottom, but the cutout is blocking the move tool. Big problem!

I tried suppressing the cutout, moving the decal into place, and then unsuppressing the cutout, but it kicked the decal back out of place!

There's also idea regrading decals positioning and scaling.

May be we should join efforts and push one idea named smth like "Decals improvement" with all the issues defined?

Hello,

Same problem here. I'm not allowed to move the decal if there is a hole in the surface.

2 years later and this is not fixed yet.

@pavmed Yeah, whatever works. This is super irritating. Just happened to me again the other day. The only workaround I have to offer in the interim is making the graphic larger in the direction of the space you can’t cover to offset the center. Not a great solution, but it does work... ish.

at least let us move the manipulator while coming up with a permanent solution.

thanks!

Hey, to anyone else having this problem (and **** if it's not a problem, I have a simple donut-shape and I can't get the decal to sit on it because the center is hollow, woo), here's how I got around it:

1. Go to 'Patch' and offset the surfaces you want the decals on by the smallest amount possible that doesn't result in your surface graphically intersecting with the original item. (I did my curved surface at .3 mm)

2. Using Lofts and Patches, fill in the 'holes' with surfaces. They don't have to be pretty surfaces. Just connect and knit them together.

3. Go to Render and set the material for this new surface as 'Acrylic (Clear)'. Double click the material to edit it and set the Refractive Index to 'Air'

Congratulations, you now have an invisible surface with no holes in it that you can position your decal on!

@Anonymous pretty brilliant. Will give this a shot next time I run into this situation! Also just thinking might want to set reflectivity to zero as well.
