Fusion 360 Frame Generator

Fusion 360 Frame Generator

I really loved the frame generator in inventor i always use then in making structural frames and now i am using Fusion 360 its time consuming making every profile sketch of each frame member. So having said that i really loved the frame generator to be integrated in fusion 360 thanks,

In same situation. Here my short video show that how hard to build a frame of Rexroth use MOVE/COPY , PRESS PULL , MEASURE. to create and assembly it one by one beam.

And other thing is performance. When i first create just one beam with the size is 30x30x5000 mm . Zoom and rotation had slowed down very

clearly.

Really want this too!  The lack of truss generation is the only reason I'm holding back from Fusion 360.  Once this feature is implemented, I'll throw out Solidworks and never look back...

How many Welding Fabrication shops are there in this world? What fabricator couldn't benefit from an easy frame generator like the one in Inventor? As much as I appreciated the sheet metal addition to Fusion 360 I could use a frame generator much more. Fusion would really be the ultimate maker ware for me with a frame generator, as if it isn't already. Thanks, D.M. Clark

This is ineed a leek in Fusion360 when they would come up with something similar as frame generator  this would be the ultimate cad tool for me. Although I dont understand that there arn't more people giving there back up, in my opinion there must be much more users that welcome  such a solution.

I am in the works of developing an addin for Fusion adding the frame generator capabilities.  I wouldn't mind starting a thread discussing some of the features that you would like to see.  Also, i can make a video of some of what i have right now and get some feedback.

Let me know what you think.

Thank you!

Hello Matthew,
Pleasend surprise to read your email and that you are developing a add-in with frame generator functionality.
You mentioned that you are wondering about what capabilities i'm intrested in, in general it would be great if the same functionality's as Inventor's frame generator could be in ( skeleton driven framework, mitter,notch etc) .
A library with tube's and structural frame work would be interesting to.
I'm also interested in the video so I can give you the requested feedback.

I'm willing to provide you with more requested information if you're interested in.

Kind regards,

Weldments are an extremely important feature that's gotta get added ASAP. Get everyone you know that uses fusion360 to up-vote this. Aside from this and the mediocre sheet metal (although I just downloaded a fusion update today that might improve my sheet metal experience) there is almost nothing I miss from SolidWorks.

@matthew.nichols, just saw your frame generator screencast. That's awesome, and I'm thrilled that Autodesk has someone working on this feature. One question I had is whether you did that with the public API or if you, as a ADSK employee, have access to tools (classes, methods etc) that the general public does not? I've been thinking about making some plugins, but have been debating as to whether or not I'd get half way in only to find out that I don't have the "tools" I need because they're not in the API. What you've done is as full-featured as any script I'd want to make for now and that's why I ask.

Also huge Kudos to ADSK for being so open about the inner workings of Fusion360, the roadmap, and the development of the software. This type of stuff is the reason I'm desperately trying to leave Solidworks behind... along with windows.

@marc.a.grossman

I am just using the api that is publicly available for everyone.  it is amazing how open the api is for Fusion and what you can do.

And I completely agree about weldments being an important feature; this is why i wanted to take on this project.  If you do want to get into doing some addins i would highly recommend watching the hackathon series that @ekinsb did a couple years ago-ish and that will give you a good head start.  one note to go with that is the javascript side of the api isn't in development anymore so you are just doing python, and C++.

if you need any recommendations for python lessons or tutorials let me know.

once i have my latest version semi functional i am going to start beta testing it with some of you guys on this idea thread...will keep everyone up to date on this.

I definitely need the frame generator/weldments functionality for Fusion 360 to be useful for my business.  Like others have posted in this thread, I would leave Solidworks (and Microsoft) behind in a heartbeat if this functionality becomes available in F360.

@matthew.nichols:

You're screencast looks like a great start! It looks like it's pretty functional already. The direction you're headed in seems to be exactly what I need from a frame generator/weldment drawing tool. Have you gotten a cut list generator working with either of your versions?

i had to put the addin on hold for a bit, but am going to pick it back up soon.  that is the next thing that i am looking at potentially being able to produce is a cut list.

@matthew.nichols: It's a pity you've got to shelf it for now. Is this something that you could release the source code of, in order to become a community project, or is that not possible from your position?

Hi

just wanted to add my voice to this discussion. The lack of Frame Generator is also stopping me from moving from Inventor. I really need this functionality as it is such a timesaver. Thanks to those working on the project, I hope it’s not too far away.

Hi,

What is situation of this project? We are looking a CAD software for our company and Fusion 360 would be great but because there is no "Weldments" feature it jsut cant be our choice at the moment.
