This could be achieved for example to have an option for smaller icons. The current icons are huge.

Agreed, an option to condense the control buttons (small icons, and move the Data Panel row of buttons into the main row of icons) would be appreciated.

this would be great, I've actually turned back to the older layout because of the vertical space lost,

hiding the tabs section when there is only one open would be great! or condensing it to the side of (panel / new file / save / undo / redo ).

Yes, it is horrible.  The main problem (for me) is that the new Jan2019 update DELETED toolbar undocking functionality.  And even worse, the toolbar is much bigger now, doubly compounding the problem.Obese toolbar is now permanently stuck in your face.Obese toolbar is now permanently stuck in your face.

It feels to me like they are making the buttons larger to give the impression of simplicity since its an entry level CAD platform, the same way you might make buttons large for a childrens application. It actually comes across as a bit patronizing.

I agree the toolbar is obnoxiously large. Why not just implement the standard, native toolbar design? Look how much simpler it is! This is Keynote's toolbar when in full screen. Commonly used buttons are small (although you can make them bigger in the settings). Tabs are below. It's simple and it works well.
