there needs to be an option for different shapes for the coil function or the option to coil sketch geometry

You can create a sweep along the outside geometry of an existing coil. With this you could use about any shape you wanted.

you are correct. however how do you make a helix to sweep it on? the only way ive found to make a helix is the coil function. so that is like three to many steps to do something fairly simple.
