Autodesk Construction Cloud and BIM Collaborate Pro: Best Practices/Tips & Tricks

Untitled design.png

Here are some BP and ACC/BCP best practices and tips & tricks I have collected over the years.  These will help you in your work and hopefully prevent any unnecessary issues that may creep up during your BIM workflow.

Thanks.

Best Practices:

  • Model Warnings must be reviewed and resolved on a regular basis
  • Use Detail Lines more than Model Lines
  • Use Room Separation Lines sparingly and avoid overlapping of RSL and Walls
  • Link files rather than Import/Bind
  • Restart Revit before memory-intensive operations (printing set)
  • DO NOT disable the Revit Accelerator process within Windows startup (Task Manager)
    • When disabled, delta files will not download and the PacCache folder will not be created
    • If the PacCache folder is not listed under the User account, the process will not run
    • File Location:  C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit
  • Purge if file size increases dramatically (Purge 3 times consecutively for Materials to purge)
  • Reduce DWG/RVT Links as much as possible…Load only when you work
  • Avoid large model sizes by not modeling everything
    • Split model by Bldg, Discipline, Floor, or Zone
  • Audit models on a weekly basis…more if the model changes rapidly
  • Avoid Groups if possible
  • Delete unnecessary Views
  • Close Hidden Windows when working
  • Limit family modeling details and parameters
  • Do not insert DWG files, model data instead

Collaboration:

  • Ensure the same Revit build is installed on all workstations (build, updates, patches, fixes, etc.)
  • Ensure the same Autodesk Desktop Connector is installed on all workstations
  • Close any worksets not required instead of using the visibility state change method
  • Sync and Relinquish all worksets  and close files when away from the desk
  • Avoid multiple syncs at the same time
  • Do not leave the model open overnight
  • Close Revit every 4 hours to clear memory

Model Linking:

  • Link models as Cloud Models through the worksharing Service, use the External Resource button
  • Do not link via the Autodesk Desktop Connector (file explorer) method
  • Save all data in ACC and link from there…not your local drives
  • Link Revit models in separate worksets that are NOT visible by default and use VV to control the visibility in each view
  • Close worksets not in use
  • Close all link worksets during model open via the Specify option
  • Check if the host model has been linked in any linked model with the reference type as ‘Attachment’. If this scenario happens change the reference type of the linked host file inside the Revit link dialog box from ‘Attachment’ to ‘Overlay’.
  • Link models from the Consumed Folder (depending on shared/trust level setup)
  • Avoid Live Linking where possible…too many changes are hard to track (depending on shared/trust level setup)

Publishing:

  • Select only views you wish to publish to ACC…not all (usually)
  • Remove unnecessary links prior to publishing
  • Audit model if Revit model fails in extraction and republish data

ACC Best Practices for Design Collaboration:

  • Initiate Design Collaboration from scratch is better than from an existing cloud project
  • Permissions are to be set by Role/Company first, then if necessary member permissions level…DO NOT change folder/file permissions unless absolutely necessary
  • Publish models to teams’ folders (depending on shared/trust level setup)
  • Share and Consume Packages as needed (Live Linking/Shared Linking/Consumed Linking)
  • Understand the trust levels (Low, Mid, and High Level Trust workflow model) before beginning work
