Import legacy point clouds into RECAP

Now that C3D no longer supports point clouds within a cloud database, how do we get them into recap or a rcs/rcp file?

Yeah, that's a bummer that ReCap won't read the .isd file. You don't have the original file that was attached, that was used to create the point cloud database (.isd) ?

I have a partial workaround, but it won't use all the points, only the maximum displayed points. You can right click the point cloud on Prospector, add Points to Surface, and then it would be an easy task to extract the points from the surface to xyz ascii file using LISP. That xyz file could be used to make a point cloud in ReCap, but, again, not all the points will be transferred.

Someone who is good with .NET might be able to extract the points directly from the point cloud, but VisualLISP, the language I know (besides my tenuous grasp on English) does not expose the points collection.

Hey Tim,

If you have a drawing that has a legacy point cloud attached, could you try opening it in 2018 and see if the cloud shows up in Prospector?

I just tried that and the point cloud only shows up as a frame, no points, and no entry in Prospector.

That is my experience as well. So apparently there is ZERO support for legacy point  clouds.

I agree, that appears to be the case.

I filed a support case for this issue. I am posting the response in case anyone else looks into this:

Thank you for patience. My name is *******. This case was escalated to me for my review and I will be assisting you with your case. Unfortunately Create Point Cloud functionality is removed from Civil 3D 2018. Opening 2017 drawing with point cloud and surface created by point cloud with Civil 3D 2018 will throw a message “The Ambercore spatial point cloud file format is no longer supported and cannot be displayed. Import the original scan data in ReCAP and reattach the point cloud.”   You could still see your surface created that way if you open it in 2018 but point cloud will not be visible. It will be shown as a box with properties listed as “Point Cloud”. If you remove point cloud object and rebuild your surface it will disappear because the underlying ISD file will be missed.     As a possible workaround, if you have your surface, you can export surface via LANDXML from 2017 version and import it into 2018 version. Other way to get your point cloud is to utilize ReCap and import your LAS, ASCII, etc. files and then create RCS/RCP file. That REC/RCP file can be attached in Civil 3D 2018.

Bummer.

You might hope that they could get the ReCap development team to read the .isd files, but I won't hold my breath. Someone else wants to turn blue, go right ahead...

...or allow us to attach .isd files in addition to Recap files.
