Large DWGs and ACAD/MAP 201x 64 bits and Memory usage

Hello from France

I have no question , my topic is just an Info ...

As you know the 32 bits version of ACAD 20xx-201x "ACAD.exe" task can use up to about 1.3 Gb Ram

At this point AutoCAD 32 bits 20xx-201x is completely unstable and will crash in a few seconds ...

On 32 bits Windows, a process is limited to 2 Go of memory used ...

But with 64 bits Windows the memory used by a Windows 64 bits process is "almost" unlimited !

In fact it depends from the main memory of the PC ...

So I have done some tests with ONE large 2D DWG (GIS/Map drawing) : 290 Mo (DWG 2007 format)

We are speaking of about : 800 000 Texts, 940 000 Plines, 230 000 Hatches, 680 000 Blocks and some others entities ...

Tests have been done with MAP 64 bits : 2011 & 2012 & 2013 & 2014 (latest SP installed)

and with ACAD 2013 & 2014 64 bits (latest SP installed) on Win Seven Pro 64 + SP 1 ...

All ACAD/MAP software vere running with SDI = 1 , it's better !

I have tested ONLY loading time and memory used by the 64 bits "ACAD.exe" of standard ACAD and MAP ...

MAP 2011 & MAP 2012 : loading = about 2 mn 30 secs - memory used about 6.6/6.7 Gb

MAP 2013 & MAP 2014 : loading = about 2 mn 20 secs - memory used about 6.8 Gb

ACAD 2013 & ACAD 2014 : loading = about 2 mn 00 secs - memory used about 7.1 Gb

The DWG is usable and no specific problem with any MAP or ACAD ...

BUT something is absolutely UNUSABLE : the properties dialog box when TOO MUCH entities have been selected !

It depends from the speed/power of the processor : between 100 000 to 500 000 entities

... and you must wait a very long time so you have to KILL the "ACAD.exe" process !

I know that since ACAD 2012, we have the new System Var PROPOBJLIMIT (0-32767) ...

But with 64 bits software we can know load and use very large DWG

so I think that Autodesk has to IMPROVE the sort and display of large selection set for the properties dialog box !!!

I am running on a HP Z1 WorkStation on W7 Pro 64 + SP1 , Xeon E3 1245 (Speed 3.3-3.7 Ghz, 8 Gb cache) , 32 Gb Ram , Quadro 1000m (2 Gb)

Waiting ...

The Health, Happy New Year, Bye, Pat

Hi,

Wow, never had such a drawing size (and if I would have data for that I would have done that with GIS-FD objects) 😉

>> absolutely UNUSABLE : the properties dialog box when TOO MUCH entities have been selected !

You might try to reduce the active areas in the properties window, so e.g. if you select polylines .. minimize the area "Geometry", then the area for polylines is not calculated which makes the process of showing data in the properties window a lot faster.

Alternativly you might switch to "quick properties" as you can configure there what properties for what object type is shown and which not.

Hello Alfred

Thks for your msg ...

The problem is with very large selection sets : the properties dialog box is absolutely UNUSABLE

because in my test I see ALL the 290 Mb DWG and I select a large part of the DWG !

Despites of this problem, my ACAD/MAP (in fact my PC) can run & use this large DWG ...

I will do some other tests with larger/bigger DWG ...

The Health, Happy Near Year, Bye, Pat

Hello

It's just Info ...

My previous huge DWG was a 290 Mb (2D GIS/Mapping) used with ACAD MAP 201X x64 !

But this week, I work on a 340 Mb (2D GIS/Mapping) with many ODs (MAP Object Data) !!

This DWG (In fact the task "ACAD.exe") is using only about 9 Gb Ram

I like playing with this kind of DWG ... but you MUST BE VERY careful with these HUGE DWGs ...

------ I am running with ------
ROLLOVERTIPS = 0
SELECTIONPREVIEW = 2 / 1 / 0
QPMODE = 0
CTRL W - Cyclic control = OFF
PreView for commands Creation and commands Editing = DISABLE (2015/2016)
LINEFADING = 0 / LINESMOOTHING = 0 (2015/2016)
etc

and almost always with UNDO Control = ONE or = NONE

Because the UNDO file size is technically limited to 2 Gb but ACAD doesn't let the UNDO file using more than about 1.75 Gb ..

My PCs are: Notebook Dell Precision M4600 20 Gb Ram OR Workstation HP Z1 32 Gb Ram ...

My workstation is about 30-60% faster on these DWGs ...

I am using ACAD MAP 2014 + SP2 x64 and if possible NOT ACAD MAP 2013 or 2015 or 2016

because the stability of the 2014 is BETTER !

Happy WE, Regards, Patrice (I am not an Autodesk Advisor)

Hello

Going on with Infos related to HUGE 2D DWGs ...

1) NOW my NEW record is a DWG of about 436 Mb

2) During assembly of the 6 DWGs, the task "ACAD.exe" has increased up to about 30 Gb

It's a LIMIT for me because I am running on PCs with 32 Gb Ram ...

I am running on a old HP Z1 (Win Seven Pro) with a Xeon E3-1245 (not very fast because speed =3.2-3.6 Ghz)

Of course ONLY one program running = ACAD/MAP + Windows Task Manager + CPU-Z

PC disconnected from the Web/Internet and NO Network !

3) Tech Info during assembly: SDI = 1 and UNDO = NONE and INSERT in EXPLODE Mode

4) Running the assembly on ACAD MAP 2014 which is much more RELIABLE for this task !

compared to 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 versions ...

5) When I reload the 436 Mb DWG (7 490 210 objects) with ACAD MAP 2014/2015/2016/2017/2018 ...

Reload Time : about 3-4 mn

Memory used by the task "ACAD.exe" about 10 Gb

But as soon as I use this HUGE DWG, the memory used is increasing

SO to use REALLY this 436 Mb DWG, you must be on a PC with MORE than 16 Gb ...

6) The properties dialog box is very often CLOSED ! ... It's a security !

NEVER select MANY HATCHEs or you are DEAD !!!

7) And of course >>>

UCSDETECT = 0 , QPMODE = 0 , ROLLOVERTIPS = 0 , SELECTIONPREVIEW = 2

CTRL W - Cyclic control = OFF
PreView for commands Creation and commands Editing = DISABLE (2015/201X)

Regards, Patrice
