In very simple terms

Alembic is a file format that is used in particular to export animations and it works great as a proxy. The downside is that, when you export the Alembic file, you don't export the material.

ASS - Arnold Scene Source is the proxy system used by Arnold, but by far superior to Alembic. Not only can you export animations, but also lights, materials, operators and so on. Also, when you open a scene with ASS files, you open it in seconds, because nothing is loaded until rendering time. That means you can work with scenes with very heavy geometry without crashing your system for lack of resources. The downside of using ASS files is that you can't convert them back to geometry.
