Variant Set Capture Overwrites User Scripts

Dear Development Team,

I just realized, that capturing a variant set in the simple UI mode overwrites the complete user script data in the variants sets script tab! Is that correct or did I miss something? If correct, then this is a pretty bizarre implementation! How can you simply overwite all the effort that a user has invested into scripting a VRED scene without notice?!

Please reconsider.

Thanks!

Ingolf

Hello Ingolf,

nothing gets overwritten for me when capturing a new variant set. Of course if you recapture a variant set everything in this set will be replaced, including scripts. The simple UI was designed for low-end users to give them an easier access to some of the software´s functionality. Those users are not expected to do any sort of scripting. If you are scripting something you are expected to be an advanced user who knows how to create and edit variant sets in the normal UI.

Kind regards

Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry to contradict but the user scripts do get overwritten on my system.

1. In standard UI mode > Variant Sets > create variant set "hello" > script >  print "hello world"

2 . Execute variant set >>> hello world - So for, so good!

3. Switch to simple UI Mode > double click variant set "hello" >>> "hello world" - still good

4. Click the re-capture button (circle with arrow) > ok

5. Double click variant set "hello" >>> ????!!!!

If you do not support switching between the two UI modes then I believe you should not put that button in the main menu but rather give the user the one time choice between the two modes at startup.

Even more important: How to create and verify a VR-InScene menu from the standard UI mode? The variant set previews are barely visible in the standard UI mode whereas they are nicely visible in the simple UI mode.

Best regards

Hi Ingolf,

I think there is a misunderstanding of what recapture means. It means: Create a new capture of the scene state and replace the existing one with it. Now the new capture can not have the script since a script is not a scene state. Therefore if a script was present in the variant set you replace with the new capture, this script gets lost.

I completely agree with the icon size issue in the Pro UI, in fact I am nagging for years to do a complete rewrite of the variants.

As far as the simple UI goes....well I better not start ranting about it, in my opinion it is just the worst piece of the whole software.

Kind regards

Michael

Thanks Michael!

I share your assessment to 100% ! It would be great if you could either make the script a part of the scene state or if you could leave the script tab untouched if it is not a part of the scene state.

Best regards!
