Switch an object into the same position of another one

So basically I got a bike, which has a tube that is kept in position by two bolts. I have the complete render file of this bike in .vpb format. Recently one component of this bike (the tube I mentioned before) got modified. In order to update the original render I got two options:

A) Import the new CAD file and reapply every single setting manually, which would take away a crazy amount of time.

B) Import just the new tube component and switch it with the old one in same exact position.

Of course I'm leaning towards option B, but I don't know how to achieve such result... Importing the object is easy, I know I could set the XYZ coordinatese manually copying the ones of the old component, but since the dimensions are not exactly the same, that couldn't be ideal... The only sure thing is that there are two holes (where the bolts go in) that must be aligned with the holes on the frame. But I doubt that VRED has an align option of any kind, at least I couldn't find it. So basically I guess I should translate and rotate the object manually and do a eye-precision work, the better I can...

P.S. Also another thing: if you git a bicycle, and you want to test different size of wheels, like 19" rather than 24", etc. on the same bicycle, but without having to go back to CAD software and reimport the whole bike assembled every time, is there any easy way to tell VRED how to align the wheel to the front fork? Because this is kind of a recurrent problem I'm facing costantly: I want to move around and try to switch and see how different stuff looks when mounted...

Hi,

in this situation I try to do this:

i create a new assembly in my Cad with the new or modified objects. I suppress, o make invisible, depending on the cad features, all the things that a don’t want to reimport.

then I import in Vred not the single object, but the whole new assembly.

if the origin of the new assembly is the same of the old, and the objects are interchangeable, everithyng should appear in the correct position.

the only thing than can change is if in Vred you have moved the model.

hope this can help you.

Hi,

what Christian wrote should work, as long as the object is at an identical position in the two different CAD files. Additionally, you can "cut" and "paste with transformation" to get the part from the new scene graph position to the old one w/o changing its position. Afterwards, you can remove the second tree again, if you don't need it.

Cheers,
Marcus

This looks like a very good solution. I could make the new model, import it, then if I want, copy from the Scenegraph tree remove all the parts except the new one and import from the old object tree the other parts.

Just one doubt: what can I don if I have moved my object from the origin? Is there a way to see the XYZ coordinates of my whole object from its root so that I can copy paste them? Or maybe there is a built-in function that can do this automatically I guess? Something like "copy position" to transfer it to multiple other objects. Or even better, most likely there is a function to "reset to origin position"?

hi,

in case you moved the model, what Marcus wrote is the solution.

Copy your object and "Paste with Transformations".

But if you moved the father node, it should be enough copy and paste the object. it should maintains the relative position.

And There is also, as you ask, the "Copy and Paste Transformations"  but this works only on the object transformations, not if you moved the father node.
